Origin of name and coat of arms
The place name comes from the Bavarian Untraha "Zwischenwasser" due to its location on Mondsee and Attersee.
Blazon of the municipal coat of arms : "In gold, a blue oblique beams, in a silver fish, accompanied up of a red heart."
The church colors are blue, yellow, red.
Award of the municipal coat of arms and approval of the municipal colors set by the municipal council on November 9, 1979 by resolution of the Upper Austrian provincial government of August 25, 1980. The design of the coat of arms comes from Herbert Erich Baumert from Linz.
Coat of arms of the Alt family from Salzburg, related to the Lasser family of Lasseregg and Unterach, based on a glass window and tombstone in the Unterach parish church. The fish also underlines the location of the community on the lake and is reminiscent of fishing as a formerly profitable source of income for the residents. The coat of arms was used in a similar form in the communal stamp and on letter paper in the interwar period without official approval.
history
- Stilt : The municipality remains were one of the youngest Stone and Bronze Age dating stilt houses found the Eastern Alpine stake building culture.
- Rule : In the Middle Ages, the Unterach office belonging to the Kogl rule was here. The Vischmaister - whose name indicates the great importance of fishing - were the lords of Unterach in the late Middle Ages. They were followed by the Lasser von Lasseregg, and in the course of the 16th and 17th centuries the noble estate of this family developed into a separate, small ruling district. The castle, which was built around 1560, was heavily modified by renovations in the early 20th century
- Plague time : According to tradition, the plague raged on the Attersee so badly that no one was spared from it. Everyone around the Attersee had died, only Faschinger was still alive. He was desperate about his loneliness. So he lit a fire and looked to see if his mark would be seen. Indeed, it was noticed, and on the other side of the lake, in the Weyregg area , a column of smoke rose. He quickly pushed his boat into the water to get to the other bank. But in the middle of the lake another boat came towards him. Inside was a woman who had been spared the plague alone in Weyregg. And the residents around the Attersee are said to be descended from this couple. Faschinger and Weyreggerin now had to bury all the dead. The place where this supposedly happened is still called misery today . That was because of the fact that the work of burying was so terrible that one of them exclaimed: "Is that a misery!"
- Little Venice : In the past, Unterach could hardly be reached by car or horse. Therefore, because of the bank buildings built on stilts and because of the numerous boats, it was called Little Venice .
- Tram / local train Unterach-See : In the first half of the 20th century, the Unterach – See electric railway connected the shipping traffic from Lake Attersee and Lake Mondsee on Mondsee ( Stern & Hafferl ).
