history

Certificate of indulgence Schwanenstadt

The history of Schwanenstadt goes back to the time of the Illyrians and Celts. They founded a settlement called Tergolape (“Small Market on the Water”) near today's city center . During the Roman colonial period, a post office was built due to its favorable location on the main route Ovilava ( Wels ) - Juvavum ( Salzburg ). Tergolape's final position is still the subject of scientific discussion.

The first documented name for the flourishing place was Suanaseo in 788. The newly designated Schwans market was first mentioned in 1361. On June 26, 1627, the Schwans market was raised to the town of Schwanenstadt after Count Adam von Herberstorff had bought the market for 125,000 guilders. In the following centuries, Schwanenstadt developed more and more into an economic, social, cultural, sporting and educational center.

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century. Since 1490 it has been assigned to the principality 'Austria ob der Enns'. In 1627 the city charter was granted by Adam Graf von Herberstorff . During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times. Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place. The community was part of the Schwanenstadt judicial district until the end of 2004 and became part of the Vöcklabruck judicial district on January 1, 2005.

Culture and sights

  • Schwanenstadt local history museum: The local history museum is located in the Pausinger villa. The garden of the Pausinger Villa is located on a Bavarian burial ground that was excavated and scientifically developed in the 1970s. Roman excavation finds could also be recorded. The house was bought and renovated by the municipality and has housed the Schwanenstadt local history museum since May 26, 2007.
The history of Schwanenstadt goes back to the time when the Illyrians and Celts populated the country and founded a settlement called Tergolape ("Small Market on the Water") not far from today's city center. During the Roman colonial period, it became a post office due to its favorable location on the main road Ovilava (Wels) - Juvavum (Salzburg). Many of these finds can be viewed in the Heimathaus.
With the support of the gold bonnet group Schwanenstadt and chairwoman Lisa Berger, the Heimathaus association has succeeded in acquiring a valuable original document from 1290.

  • movable fasting crib , the Werkl : is located in the Kalvarienbergkirche. One kilometer north of Schwanenstadt is the parish's calvary church on a small hill. It wasconsecrated as an Apostle Churchby Bishop Albert Schönhofer in 1488and converted into a Calvary Church in 1721. A Way of the Cross leads from the city to the church, whose new, modern pictures were consecrated in 1983. The Lent Crib can only be visited on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Philippsberg Church has housed a folklore rarity in an extension, probably since 1719, which is only accessible in the Kartagen: Amovable fasting nativity scene, the Werkl , is set upabove a holy grave decorated with colorful glass balls. On a small revolving stage, figures about 20 cm tall, carved and painted in the style of the late peasant baroque, pass the viewer on two levels. They reveal the five secrets of the painful rosary. Above this movable part, a relief shows Pilate washing his hands. The "Werkl" is operated by a clock mechanism that gets its power from a heavy weight on the outside wall of the church. It needs to be wound up every 90 minutes.

The original market coat of arms, first proven in 1565, showed a standing swan. On the occasion of the town elevation in 1627, the coat of arms in use today was introduced. The gate and towers mark the place as a city, the mill wheel is the main coat of arms of Adam Graf Herberstorff, who obtained city rights shortly after acquiring the Schwans market. The swans stand for the folk etymological derivation of the place name.
