history

In the Neolithic Age, hunters made their forays into the dense beech forests north of the Hongar.

There is documentary evidence of a Bavarian settlement around 800 with the -ing -names Wörtzing and Jetzing, which were common for that time . The place name Aurach indicates a settlement at a river crossing.

In the High Middle Ages (around 1200) a part of the Aurach am Hongar area belonged to the Asbach / Rott monastery near Passau, and another part to Count Gebhard von Regau.

In 1458 Bishop Sigismund von Passau consecrated a chapel - patronage of St. Evangelist Matthew and St. Alexius the Confessor (hermit / hermit). As a result, the pastor of Schörfling am Attersee was obliged to read a mass every Thursday in Aurach. In the course of the Josephine church reform , Aurach received its own pastor in 1784, but did not become an independent parish until 1876. After the old parish church burned down in 1888, the new building that still exists today was inaugurated in 1893.

It is interesting that a schoolmaster in Aurach is mentioned in a church bill as early as 1594. In this context, reference must also be made to the hermitage near the St. Alexi chapel , the construction of which was approved by the Passau prince-bishop Josef Dominicus at the request of Count Khevenhüller in 1726. The hermit, brother Josef Würth, former chamber clerk of Count Khevenhüller , was given the task of teaching the youth to read and write.

In 1991 the community had 1,368 inhabitants according to the census, in 2001 it had 1,585 inhabitants.

The municipal coat of arms was awarded in 1980. As a talking coat of arms , the aurochs head and the waves explain the place names ( ahd. Ur = aurochs and aha = flowing water). The wave bar also stands for the Aurach drought, the Dreiberg for the Hongar.
