Leopold Steinbichler

Leopold Steinbichler (born February 26, 1959 in Aurach am Hongar , Upper Austria ), often called Leo (peasant rebel or palm oil Leo), is an Austrian politician . From 1997 to 2003 he was a member of the Federal Council ( ÖVP ), from October 2013 to November 2017 he was a member of the National Council ( Team Stronach , from August 2017 without a club membership).

Life

After attending primary school in Aurach and secondary school in Schörfling , Leopold Steinbichler first attended a polytechnic in Seewalchen am Attersee and finally, from 1976 to 1977, the agricultural college in Vöcklabruck . Steinbichler has been working as a farmer since 1976 . In this function, he was also elected chairman of the district chamber of farmers in the Vöcklabruck district in 1991 . He held this position until his expulsion from the farmers' union.

In 1985 he moved for the ÖVP in the municipality of Aurach am Hongar. In 1991 he became a member of the community council . In January 1997 he was sworn in as a member of the Federal Council in Vienna . Until October 2003, Steinbichler represented the interests of Upper Austria in the regional chamber of Austria. Since 2005 Steinbichler has acted as managing director of Steinbichler + Partner Versicherungsmakler GmbH , based in Regau . In 2007 Steinbichler, who now openly spoke out against the agricultural policy of the ÖVP, was expelled from the farmers' union, which also meant that he lost the chairmanship in the Vöcklabruck district chamber of farmers. In the meantime Steinbichler was active in the Austrian Business Association, after he had built the “Wimberghof” in Vöcklabruck with two colleagues, it went bankrupt after disagreements in the management. Steinbichler is a founding member and former deputy chairman of IG Milch and chairman of IG Fleisch .

In the National Council election in 2008 , the "agricultural rebel" ran as the top candidate on the Upper Austrian provincial list for the Fritz Dinkhauser list . Around 2011 he was a parliamentary group expert for the FPÖ on agricultural issues. For the 2013 National Council election , Frank Stronach brought him onto the list of Team Stronach , whose state party chairman for Upper Austria he was until 2015, and he moved into the National Council with a mandate from the Upper Austrian state list. Steinbichler was area spokesman for agriculture and forestry, family, tourism as well as chairman of the consumer protection committee and economic spokesman in the parliamentary club of the Stronach team. In 2015, a candidate for his own list of competence platform 'Wir für Oberösterreich' failed in the state elections in Upper Austria in 2015 due to insufficient declarations of support. In 2016, investigations against Steinbichler were suspended on suspicion of serious fraud in connection with a takeover of the farm.

After the Stronach team lost club status in the National Council in August 2017, he remained as a non-attached member of parliament until the 2017 National Council election. He supported the candidacy of the whites in the 2017 National Council election and ran on their federal list, as well as as the top candidate on the Upper Austrian provincial list.
