history
Frankenburg was part of the Roman province of Noricum since 16 AD. Baiern immigrated from the Franconian area around 600 and cleared the area in Hausruck. Around 1100 Rapoto von Julbach built the Frankenburg on the Hofberg, which gives it its name . Since the 12th century the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria . Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns .
In 1581, Hans von Khevenhüller-Frankenburg bought the Kammer Castle from Emperor Rudolf II, as well as the Kogl Castle (where the Khevenhüller built Kogl Castle in 1750 ) and Frankenburg with Frein Castle , which were combined to form the “Grafschaft Frankenburg”. The Frankenburg am Hofberg was given up as the administrative seat, and on June 11, 1621 Emperor Ferdinand II raised the nearby village of Zwispallen (previously Zwischenwalden ) to the Frankenburg market.
When in May 1625 - at the time of the Thirty Years' War - a Roman Catholic clergyman was supposed to be installed in Frankenburg, there was an armed uprising among the majority of the Protestant citizens and farmers. This rebellion was abandoned after three days, however, as the Bavarian governor Adam Graf von Herberstorff promised "mercy" if the rebels come to Haushamerfeld without defense or weapons. However, this “grace” was terrible: Herberstorff appeared accompanied by a strong military unit and declared the Franconians present to be sentenced to death. 36 committee men had to throw the dice for their life in pairs: Half of them were pardoned, the other half found death by the rope. This Frankenburg dice game was the prelude to the Upper Austrian Peasant Wars . Karl Itzinger set a literary monument to this event in his novel Das Blutgericht am Haushamerfeld , since 1925 they have been re-enacted every two years by around 400 amateur actors on the largest natural open-air stage in Europe.
During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times. The Khevenhüller then sold the Lords of Kogl and Frankenburg to the Viennese lawyer Andreas Pausinger (1765-1818), who also acquired the Ungenach and Unterach am Attersee from Khevenhüller . In 1816, Pausinger was raised to hereditary nobility by King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria . After the death of Pausingers, his estates in Frankenburg, Kogl, Ungenach and Unterach were divided among his bereaved. Franz von Pausinger (1794–1850) received Frankenburg as the firstborn, which he sold to his brother Karl Johann (1795–1848) in 1828, who also bought the remaining shares until 1834 and thus became the sole owner of the lordship. Frein Castle in Frankenburg was owned by the von Pausinger family from 1810 to 1848 . After the death of Karl Johann von Pausinger in 1848, the property was divided between his children Karl Valentin, Felix and Julia. Karl Valentin von Pausinger sold the Frankenburg estate to Franz Schaupp in 1849, while his brother Felix sold the Kogl and Unterach estate to the industrialist Franz Mayr von Melnhof in 1872 .
Frankenburg has been part of the federal state of Upper Austria since 1918. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . In 1945 Upper Austria was restored.
Population development
In 1991 the community had 5013 inhabitants according to the census, in 2001 it had 5110 inhabitants. In November 2006 the population was already 5,190. However, at the end of 2008 it fell below the 5,000 mark.
Culture and sights
- Frankenburg : The Frankenburg was a defense system in the Middle Ages and later also the administrative seat. It was located on the Hofberg, a hill in the market town of Frankenburg.
- Frein Castle : Frein Castle originally belonged to Mattsee Abbey . In 1370 it was owned by the Mattsee citizen Chunrad der Schedinger. In 1593, Hans Christoph Geymann acquired the castle from the estates. In 1621 Frein and Frankenburg were sold to Hans von Khevenhüller-Frankenburg . In 1674 it came into the possession of Andreas von Pausinger and his descendants until 1849. Then the castle was acquired by Franz Schaup, one of the co-founders of the Zipf brewery . The brewery dynasty remained the owner until Emilie Schaup died childless in 1942. The former baron family Limbeck von Lilienau had appointed them as heirs. But because of inheritance disputes, the castle was used by local Nazi officials until the end of World War II. After that, ethnic German war refugees were quartered there for two years . Today the building houses a home parlor and the headquarters of the Frankenburg forest and estate administration as well as the archive of the Frankenburg home association. The owner and lord of the palace is Christian Limbeck-Lilienau, who lives in Vienna and who granted the Zogaj family free accommodation in the building in 2007.
- Lookout tower on the Göblberg : At 801 meters, the Göblberg is the highest point in Hausruck in the middle of Upper Austria. Therefore you can see almost the whole country when the weather is nice. Hausruck and Kobernaußerwald consist of ice-age gravel and form the largest contiguous forest area in Central Europe. The observation tower was built in 2006 by the ARGE observation tower Göblberg as a leader project of the market communities Ampflwang and Frankenburg and funded by the state of Upper Austria and the European Union.
The 35 meter high larch wood construction was planned by Meinhart + Partner engineering office and executed by Schmid Bauunternehmung Holzbau GmbH from April to May 2006. The tower received recognition from Upper Austria. Timber construction award for its technical know-how and its solid construction as a “landmark that cannot be overlooked”.
The webcam on the observation tower faces east and south and takes photos of Ampflwang and Frankenburg every five minutes. These are put on the Internet by Minniberger-flashnet. Power is supplied by a solar panel.
- The mountain panorama: In the north, the panorama stretches from the Großer Arber in the Bavarian Forest, 117 km away, into the Mühlviertel to Hochficht. In the east, on good days, the Ötscher can be seen 128 km away. The peaks of the Sengsengebirge and the Dead Mountains are closer. The Traunstein stands out in front of it. The Höllengebirge in the south often seems close enough to touch and behind the blue Attersee you can see the white peaks of the Dachstein. Also striking is the Schafberg, from which it goes west to the Salzburg mountains: Tennengebirge, Hochkönig and Untersberg. Watzmann and Hochstaufen lead to Bavaria and the Wendelstein on the edge of the Chiemgau Alps completes the mountain panorama. Further to the west you can see the extensive forests of the Kobernaußer Wald and above, 146 km away, some have already discovered the brightly lit oval of the Munich Allianz Arena at night.
- Botanical garden : In Hintersteining, around five kilometers from the center, the botanical garden with a large biotope was opened in 1998.
- Hobelsberg-Riesn nature reserve : On the Hobelsberg, a 4.1 hectare forest property was dedicated as a nature reserve in 2005, which is characterized above all by its large occurrence of the wild moon viole.

coat of arms
Blazon : “Divided; blue heart label with golden roman capital letter F; above in black over a golden twin wavy bar a golden, transverse oak branch with two leaves and an upright acorn; below, in red, a silver cushion with gold tassels at the four corners and on top of it a black, gold-decorated post horn with a black, cross-twisted cord. "
The acorn branch on the wavy beam is the family coat of arms of the Khevenhüller-Aichelberg, which belonged to the Frankenburg rulership for almost three centuries until 1810. The hip horn lying on the pillow (incorrectly described as "post horn" in the award certificate) is taken from the coat of arms of Franz Christoph Khevenhüller's first wife, Barbara Teufel von Gundersdorf († 1634). Family coat of arms of the couple on the watercolor painting, fol. 408/409 in the Khevenhüller Chronicle written by Georg Moshamer in 1623/24. The heart shield at the “most elegant” part of the coat of arms is to be understood as a tribute to Emperor Ferdinand II.
