The botanical garden in winter

The Botanical Garden Frankenburg is an arboretum in Hintersteining , a district of the market town of Frankenburg am Hausruck in Upper Austria . The facility on the forest ridge of the Hausruck mountain range is not affiliated with any college or university, but rather sees itself as a park and recreation area.

location

The facility is located at the end of the Redl valley on the south side of the Hausruckwald at a height of approx. 550 m. The valley is oriented to the south and is bordered in the east and west by hills - some with broken rocks - up to a height of 800 m. To the south there is a clear view of the Alps, with the Traunstein , the Dachstein massif and the Hohe Tauern .

history

Between 1950 and 1956, Felix Bentz, a young forester and local forester, started the first plantings on a plot of the Limbeck-Lilienau forest estate on his own initiative. Bentz got plants and seeds from all parts of the world to study their growth behavior under local climatic and soil conditions. The initial plantings should have included around 800–1000 trees and bushes.

From 1965/70 the garden was forgotten again.

In 1992 the property was offered to the community of Frankenburg and bought by them. After the establishment of a working group headed by Josef Pachinger, the revitalization of the facility began in cooperation with the Frankenburg community and a large number of volunteers. The test stands had meanwhile been largely overgrown by the spruce, the forest tree of the Hausruck, and were released again. Paths and ponds were laid out and replanted, with the result that the population has grown back to 1000 copies. Most of these plants come from a private garden in Pfarrkirchen in Bavaria. A beekeeping trail has also been laid out. The garden has since been expanded by a third to around 2.4 hectares.

The trees and shrubs are planted together in groups according to continents, so that a closed impression of a floral space is formed. All copies are labeled.

The garden can be visited free of charge all year round. If you register in advance at the market town hall, guided tours are also offered. The arboretum is looked after by voluntary helpers and by the building yard of the market town of Frankenburg.

Botanical trail

In 1998 the botanical hiking trail was set up. Along this 10 km long path, display boards give hikers an insight into the local nature. The hiking trail is designed as a circular hiking trail and begins or ends at the Frankenburg market square. It leads through the flora in the nature reserve on the Grünberg to the botanical garden and through the raised bog area .
