history

Outbuildings

The rule of Kogl came in 1581 to Hans Freiherr von Khevenhüller . Since the medieval castle was no longer up to date, Franz Ferdinand Graf Khevenhüller commissioned the Linz master builder Johann Michael Prunner to draw up a plan for a new castle at the foot of the Koglberg.

In 1810 the Innviertel came under the Kingdom of Bavaria for a short time. At that time, Counts Anton and Josef Khevenhüller sold their properties in Upper Austria (Kogl Castle and Frankenburg ) to the Viennese court attorney Andreas von Pausinger . In 1861 Kogl and Unterach came to the Baron Mayr von Melnhof . From this the property passed in 1884 to his daughter Theodora on the occasion of her wedding to Count Adalbert von Kottulinsky . In 1936 Kogl came to the nephew of Countess Kottulinsky, Baron Friedrich Mayr von Melnhof, and half to his son of the same name.

From 1943 until the end of the Second World War , the castle was occupied by the Nazi special staff of Reichsleiter Rosenberg . This was a robbery organization of the NSDAP for cultural goods. Pictures from the castle were searched for a long time.

After 1945 an American army corps general resided here. The Mayr-Melnhof family has owned the castle again since 1956. The castle was completely renovated and revitalized in 2000. It is used by the Mayr-Melnhof family as a summer residence. The representation rooms can also be rented for receptions, wedding celebrations and seminars, as can the park for summer parties.

description

Portal with alliance coat of arms

In 1889 and 1911/12 extensive expansions were made to the palace complex. The main wing and side wing were raised. The restoration of the two towers and the palace chapel were carried out according to the plans of the Munich architect Mathes and the Graz architect August Gunold. The facility is designed in a horseshoe shape. Access to the courtyard to the south-east is emphasized by trimmed box trees. The two side wings are connected by a porticoed column . A stone portal in the middle gives access to the courtyard. The stone alliance coat of arms of the Mayr-Melnhof and Kottulinsky families is attached above the archway.

In the courtyard there is a group of fountains with boys fishing, designed by the Graz sculptor Richard Jakitsch. In the castle chapel there are six bronze reliefs of the stations of the cross, sculpted by Jakitsch (the remaining eight were created by the Viennese sculptor Winkler) and a relief of the Ascension of Christ above the altar . Allegorical frescoes adorn the entrance hall of the palace, and five animal pictures by the painter Franz Xaver von Pausinger hang in the dining room . Pausinger was the son of the previous owner of the castle. The cycle of frescoes in the stairwell and in the gallery shows scenes from the spendthrift of Ferdinand Raimund . They were made by Josef Engelhart and Eduard Komlóssy . Engelhard had started work on this in 1913 with his painter friend Franz Hohenberger . Disagreements with the client about the payment (the fee, which was not lavish anyway, had melted to nothing due to the devaluation of the money , and the countess was not ready to compensate for this) and the outbreak of World War I meant that the commission was completed by the painter Komlóssy .
