Helen Glover , MBE (born June 17, 1986 in Truro , Cornwall ) is a former British rower . She was Olympic champion in 2012 and 2016 in a pair without a tax woman .

Career

Glover is the daughter of a rugby player, she played field hockey as a teenager and was active as a cross-country runner. She only started rowing in 2008 during her training as a sports teacher. She rows for the Minerva Rowing Club in Bath .

Her first success as a rower was the victory in 2009 in the one at the Henley Royal Regatta . Since 2010 she started together with Heather Stanning in a two-man without a helmsman . In the 2010 World Cup season, the two achieved fifth place in Munich as their best result, and at the 2010 World Rowing Championships in New Zealand they both won the silver medal behind New Zealanders Rebecca Scown and Juliette Haigh . In 2011, Glover and Stanning won the World Cup regattas in Munich and Lucerne, and at the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled they again received silver behind Scown and Haigh.

In 2012, Glover and Stanning were the first to cross the finish line in all three World Cup regattas and they also won the Olympic final in front of their home crowd in front of the boats from Australia and New Zealand. They won the first gold medal for the British team at the Olympic Games in London and the first ever Olympic gold medal for British rowers.

At the 2013 World Rowing Championships in Chungju , she and Polly Swann won the two without helmsman. A year later she won the World Championships in Amsterdam with Heather Stanning . Stanning and Glover also won the final at the 2015 European Championships in Poznan and at the 2015 World Championships on Lac d'Aiguebelette . Glover and Stanning started the 2016 Olympic season with a victory at the European Championships in Brandenburg an der Havel . The pair continued their winning streak at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and won their second Olympic gold medal.

At the end of 2012, Helen Glover was appointed a member of the Order of the British Empire .
