history

The first documented mention of a church in Aggsbach refers to the year 1148. Rueger von Zaucha had today's church rebuilt in 1286-1300. From the 15th to the 18th century it was a pilgrimage church. The parish was established in 1632 and was incorporated into Niederaltaich Monastery until 1792 .

Exterior

The church is originally a late Romanesque pillar basilica , today with a Gothic vault, west tower and baroque choir. It has three naves and round-arched clerestory , a profiled Gothic pointed arch portal on the south side and a walled pointed arch opening to the east of the south aisle. The core of the slightly elevated choir dates from the 14th century and was redesigned in Baroque style in 1779. Its buttresses were changed in the 18th century and the baroque segmented arched windows in the polygon were bricked up. The sacristy added to the north has late Gothic rectangular windows. In the west is a square tower on the ground floor and an octagonal tower on the upper floor with ogival sound windows and an onion helmet . At the portal there is a pilaster-structured porch from 1647 with a chamfered round arch portal .

The nave of the three-bay and three-nave pillar basilica was built in 1286 and vaulted in the 14th century with cross-ribbed vaults on polygonal services. The aisles are vaulted in low, deep arcades towards the central nave. The two square aisle bays in the east are separated by slightly drawn-in, chamfered pointed arches. The arched, baroque west gallery, which takes up the entire width of the central nave, dates from the last quarter of the 18th century. A renewed groin vault can be seen in the tower vestibule. Behind the rounded, slightly drawn-in triumphal arch is a one-bay choir with a five-eighth end and ribbed vault. The choir polygon was rounded off in 1779.
