Aggsbach Markt is the capital of the political municipality of Aggsbach in Lower Austria . The place is on the left bank of the Danube in the Wachau between Spitz and Melk .
Archaeological finds in the loess revealed that there was already a Paleolithic settlement. In 830 the place was mentioned in a document from Louis the Pious as "Accussabah". Niederaltaich Abbey was wealthy here until the 13th century . In the 14th century, the Lords of Kuenring acquired large estates in the area. In 1447 the market survey took place. There are also houses from the 16th century. Fishing and trade brought the residents a modest prosperity.
In 1148 a parish church was mentioned for the first time. At the end of the 13th century a late Romanesque three-nave pillar basilica was built. The Gothic ribbed vaults, the pointed arch portal and the sacristy were built between 1390 and 1400. In 1779 the church was redesigned in baroque style. Around 1637 Aggsbach was a branch parish of Spitz, from 1724 its own parish. Until 1783, Aggsbach Dorf and Aggstein Castle belonged to the parish on the right bank of the Danube . Between the 15th and 18th centuries, Aggsbach was a popular Marian pilgrimage site.
