Catherine Bishop

Catherine "Cath" Bishop (born November 22, 1971 in Southend-on-Sea ) is a former British rower . She won an Olympic silver medal in 2004.

Career

The 1.84 m tall Catherine Bishop finished seventh at the 1995 World Championships with the British eighth . The following year, the British achieved the same place at the Olympic Games in Atlanta. In 1997 Bishop switched to the two without helmsman and together with Dot Blackie took second place at the World Cup in Paris. At the 1997 World Championships, the two were eliminated in the semi-finals. In 1998 Blackie and Bishop won the World Cup opener in Munich and the second regatta in Hazewinkel, Belgium. At the World Championships in Cologne, Canadians Alison Korn and Emma Robinson won with almost three seconds ahead of Blackie and Bishop, who won silver just ahead of the two from the United States. In 1999 Blackie and Bishop won the World Cup opener and finished third and fourth in the other two regattas. At the World Championships in St. Catharines, Canada, the British rowed to fifth place. The following year, the two Britons missed the A-final at the Olympic Games in Sydney and ended up in ninth place.

From 2001 Catherine Bishop rowed together with Katherine Grainger in an uncontrolled twos. The two won the World Cup in Vienna. At the World Championships in Lucerne, the two achieved fifth place in two. You also competed with the British eighth and finished sixth here. After a year off, Bishop and Grainger competed together again in 2003 and took second, first and third place in the three World Cup regattas. At the 2003 World Championships in Milan, the British won by one second over the Belarusians Julija Bitschyk and Natallja Helach and the Romanians Georgeta Andrunache and Viorica Susanu . In 2004, Grainger and Bishop once again achieved medal rank in the World Cup. At the Olympic Games in Athens, Andrunache and Susanu won two seconds ahead of the British, the two Belarusians won the bronze medal one second behind the British.

Catherine Bishop began rowing as a student at Pembroke College , Cambridge. She then studied at the University of Wales at Aberystwyth and received her Ph.D. in contemporary German-language literature at the University of Reading . After her rowing career, she initially worked in the diplomatic service. She has been a commentator on the Boat Race for the BBC since 2015 , and she also has other roles in rowing.
