Chungju ( kor. 충주 ) is a city in the South Korean province of Chungcheongbuk-do .
The city has 208,115 inhabitants and is around 1.6 times the size of Seoul with an area of 983.95 km² . The Chungju University has its headquarters here and the Konkuk University here has a campus.
Chungju was given city status ( -si ) on July 8, 1956 , but Jungwon-gun was split off. On January 1, 1995, they were reunited. Mayor is Lee Jong-bae ( 이종배 ).
Ban Ki-moon , the United Nations Secretary -General , went to school in Chungju. The 2013 World Rowing Championships took place on Lake Tangeum in Chungju. The Chungju Dam is about 6 km northeast of the city. The National Treasure No. 6, a seven-story stone pagoda, located in the city in Tappyeong-ri. In addition, the city and region is a well-known apple-growing area.
