World Rowing Championships 2015

The 2015 World Rowing Championships were held from August 30 to September 6, 2015 on the Lac d'Aiguebelette in Savoy (France) under the rules of the World Rowing Federation (FISA).

The regatta course was already the scene of the rowing world championships in 1997 as well as regattas of the rowing world cup . The French candidacy prevailed at the congress of the world rowing association FISA with 110: 33 votes against the applications from Strathclyde (Great Britain) and Varese (Italy). The German Rowing Association (DRV) initially also applied for the Beetzsee regatta course . In May 2011, however, the application was withdrawn due to financial risks.

At the event rowing world champions were determined in 26 boat classes, 13 of them for men, 9 for women and 4 for para rowers . The competitions in another boat class of para rowing were canceled because only one team was reported. A total of around 1300 participants from 77 nations took part in the regatta. The largest contingent came from the USA (all 27 boat classes), followed by Great Britain and Germany with entries in 25 classes each.

In addition to determining the rowing world champions, the regatta also represented the most important qualification competition for the 2016 Olympic rowing regatta in Rio de Janeiro. 129 of the 215 starting places were allocated across all boat classes, with space for 380 athletes. A total of 550 athletes will compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics in rowing. The qualification at the 2015 World Championships is not personal, but refers to the NOK's entry authorization in the boat class.
