Simon Niepmann (born August 2, 1985 in Lörrach ) is a German-Swiss rower from Grenzach-Wyhlen on the Upper Rhine .

Life

The son of a Swiss woman and a German has both nationalities. After Niepmann had taken part in his first competition for the Grenzach rowing club in 1998 , he was immediately accepted into the U16 team in Baden-Württemberg.

Later he also joined the Seeclub Zurich and the Basler Ruder Club , as the headquarters of the Swiss Rowing Association in Sarnen, 120 kilometers away, enabled him to keep his place of residence in Grenzach instead of the German Federal Rowing Center , which is more than 500 kilometers away Having to move Dortmund .

2007 Simon Niepmann began at the University of Basel to study Sports Science and Geography in teaching , but needed because of his sporting career five years instead of three for his Bachelor Accounts. In London, the team won the preliminary run the day after the opening ceremony and qualified for the semi-finals, in which they secured a place behind Great Britain in the A-final on August 2nd. In the final run , the team reached fifth place.

At the 2013 World Rowing Championships in Chungju , South Korea , he and Lucas Tramèr won the lightweight two-man without a helmsman ahead of Italy and the United Kingdom. The following year, Niepmann and Tramèr were able to defend their title at the World Championships in Amsterdam . In 2015 Niepmann and Tramèr returned to the foursome, together with Schürch and Gyr they won the titles at the European Championships in Poznan and at the World Championships on Lac d'Aiguebelette . At the European Championships in 2016 , the Swiss foursome was able to defend its title from the previous year. Four years after finishing fifth in London, the four Swiss also won the 2016 Olympic Regatta , at the finish they were almost one and a half seconds ahead of the Danes.
