Joel Cassells (* 15. June 1994 in Ballymoney , Northern Ireland ) is a British lightweight - rowers . In 2015 he won the world title in the lightweight two-man without helmsman .

Career

Cassells began rowing in Coleraine in 2006 . At the Junior World Championships in 2012, he and Christopher Black competed in two without a helmsman for Ireland and took seventh place. He has been racing for the United Kingdom since 2013, and at the U23 World Championships in 2013 , he won the silver medal behind the Italian boat with the British lightweight four without a helmsman . The following year, the British lightweight four in Varese was ahead of the Italians, but finished second behind the Spaniards as in the previous year.

At the start of the 2015 season, Joel Cassells won the European Championships in Poznan together with Peter Chambers in the lightweight two-man without a helmsman. At the U23 World Championships in 2015, Cassells received silver for the third time in a row with the British lightweight foursome, this time behind the French boat. For the world championships in the adult class, Cassells formed a lightweight two-man together with Sam Scrimgeour and won the world title at the age of 21. Cassells and Scrimgeour also won the 2016 European Championships and won the bronze medal at the 2016 World Championships .

The 1.82 m tall Cassells is studying law and politics at Oxford Brookes University and is a member of his university's rowing club.
