Ballymoney ( Irish : Baile Monaidh; Eng: "homestead on the peatland") is a town in north-east Ireland in the historic county of Antrim in Northern Ireland . It was the administrative seat of the dissolved Ballymoney District , which was merged into the Causeway Coast and Glens District in 2015 .

place

Ballymoney is located a little east of the River Bann and 25 kilometers from the Giant's Causeway in the northwest of County Antrim, a good 10 kilometers southeast of Coleraine as the nearest major town. Ballymena is about 30 kilometers to the southeast. Located on the A26 between these places, Ballymoney also benefits from good connections to the large Northern Irish cities of Belfast and Derry City . Due to the relatively higher house and land prices in and north of Coleraine, many home buyers have settled in and around Ballymoney in recent years.

In parliamentary terms, Ballymoney is part of North Antrim . The population of the place was determined in the 2001 Census with 9021 people, of which 17.3% were Catholic and 79.8% Protestant; the unemployment rate (16–74 years) was 3.9%. At the 2011 Census, the population of Ballymoney was 10,393.

Historic Buildings

A church tower from 1637 is the oldest surviving building in Ballymoney. The Masonic Hall , which has been used for different purposes over the years , was built in 1775 by the 6th Earl and 2nd Marquis of Antrim; today's town hall dates from 1866.
