William Dunlop

William Dunlop (born July 23, 1985 in Northern Ireland , † July 7, 2018 in Skerries , Ireland ) was a British motorcycle racer who competed almost exclusively in road races .

Dunlop came from a racing family. His father Robert (1960–2008) and his uncle Joey (1952–2000) were successful motorcycle racers and are among the best pilots in the history of British road racing. His brother Michael is also a motorcycle racer.

Career

William Dunlop began his career in the 125cc class at the age of 17. He made his debut at the Isle of Man TT , the largest and most prestigious road race in the world, in 2006 at the age of 20. On the Isle of Man , Dunlop celebrated four third places as best placements. He was twice on the podium with his brother Michael, who won each time.

In the other important road races North West 200 and Ulster Grand Prix , William Dunlop achieved four and five victories respectively.

In 2014, Dunlop broke his left leg twice in a serious fall at the Graham Memorial in a senior TT race .

On July 7, 2018, he succumbed to injuries sustained in a training accident for the Skerries 100 race in Ireland on the same day .
