The North West 200 is a motorcycle race that has been held annually in May in Northern Ireland since 1929 .
route
The race is a road race , similar to the Isle of Man TT or the Ulster Grand Prix , which is organized by the City of Derry & District Motor Club . The race track, called The Triangle , runs through the towns of Portstewart , Coleraine and Portrush and runs along the A2, B185 and A29 roads, which are interrupted by chicanes during racing events . The North West 200 is one of the fastest road races in the world. Speeds of up to 320 km / h are not uncommon. The highest speed so far was measured in training for the North West 200 2016 with Bruce Anstey 336 km / h.
Naming
The original race distance was 200 miles. Since Coleraine is located in the north-west of Northern Ireland as the headquarters of the organizing club, the name was clear. Due to various rule changes and an enormous increase in the participating drivers and classes, four to six laps are driven today (as of 2016), depending on the racing series.
