Excelsior Motor Company Ltd. , previously Bayliss, Thomas & Company , was a British manufacturer of bicycles , motorcycles , automobiles and engines .

Company history

The company Bayliss, Thomas & Company in 1874 in Coventry established for the production of bicycles. In 1896 motorcycle production was added. Automobiles were first made between 1904 and 1905. The brand name was Excelsior . In 1920 the name was changed to Excelsior Motor Company Ltd. and moving to Tyseley near Birmingham . Between 1922 and 1929 automobiles were again produced, which were marketed as Bayliss-Thomas . Motorcycle production ended in 1964. Excelsior-Britax became the successor company.

At the beginning of the 1950s, Excelsior built the TT 1 with a two-cylinder two-stroke engine, displacement 246 cm³ (bore 50 mm, stroke 62 mm) and four-speed gearbox with foot shift. The engine developed 10.2 hp at 4500 rpm. The chassis was a frame made of seamlessly drawn steel tubes with a telescopic fork and straight rear suspension in-house production; Tires 3.00–19. In Germany the TT 1 was offered for 2235.00 DM. The price was thus well above the German brands. In addition to the TT 1, there was a sports model S / TT 1 with 14.5 hp for 2,435.00 DM.

Excelsior motorcycles were also used in races. Among other things, the English driver Sydney Alfred Crabtree won the 1928 German Grand Prix for motorcycles on the Nürburgring with an Excelsior-Jap in the class up to 250 cc. He drove the 13 laps on the entire distance from the north and south loop or 367.439 km in 4: 08: 01.3 hours, which corresponds to an average of 88.88 km / h. L. C. Crabtree also took second place on Excelsior-Jap in the class up to 175 cm³³.
