The Morris Motor Company was a British manufacturer of motor vehicles .
history
The Morris Motor Company was founded in 1913 by bicycle manufacturer William Richard Morris . Morris opened its first automobile production facility in Cowley, Oxfordshire, and began manufacturing its first "Bull Nosed Morris" model there . In the 1920s, Morris already had an excellent reputation and was able to expand it further in the 1930s and 1940s by building up and buying additional production facilities and introducing the assembly line production developed by Henry Ford . In France, Morris acquired Automobiles Léon Bollée in 1925 . As a manufacturer of simple, but more reliable and attractively priced vehicles, the brand became the market leader in Great Britain. In 1923 Morris took over the previously independent body manufacturer Hollick & Pratt in Coventry and made it the basis of its own body production. Morris then offered various series with factory bodies. However, there were still special bodies made available by large dealers such as Stewart & Ardern in London. They were made by Cunard , among others .
During the Second World War , Morris was also active in aircraft construction. So around 2000, De Havilland Tiger Moth DH.82 - biplane built.
Shortly after the launch of the most successful Morris passenger car, the Morris Minor, in 1948, the company merged with its biggest rival Austin under the umbrella of the British Motor Corporation (BMC) in 1952 . From then on, Morris was just a brand of BMC, which offered its largely identical vehicle types under different names. The Morris brand was used until the early 1980s, most recently only for the Morris Ital, which was discontinued in 1984 .
The current Mini is produced in the original production facility in Cowley, which is now part of the BMW Group .
