Clement Talbot

Clement Talbot Ltd was a British automobile manufacturer operating from 1903 to 1938.

The development phase (1903 to 1919)

A company founded in England, whose main stakeholder was Charles Chetwynd-Talbot (20th Earl of Shrewsbury , 5th Earl Talbot), imported from 1903 French cars of the Clément brand , which were initially sold in England under the name Clement-Talbot . In 1904 the assembly of own automobiles began with components supplied by Clément. From November 1904 the brand name was Talbot . In 1906 the first Talbot manufactured exclusively in England was offered.

Takeover by Darracq (1919)

Darracq took over the company in 1919 and used the Talbot-Darracq brand name for passenger cars produced in France for a year . This brand name was used for racing cars from the production facilities in both countries until around 1930. The brand name of the British passenger car was still Talbot .

The Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq phase (1920 to 1935)

In 1920 Darracq also bought the Sunbeam brand and founded the STD (Sunbeam-Talbot-Darracq) group. The brand names of the British vehicles remained unchanged, Talbot and Sunbeam . Cars with very different engines were built between 1920 and 1927: four-cylinder models with 1.6 and 2.1 liters displacement were on offer. In 1927, three engine variants of a six-cylinder with a displacement of 2.8 to 3 liters added to the range.

The Rootes Phase (1935 to 1953)

When the STD group became insolvent in 1935, the Rootes group took over the English part of the company. The English brand Talbot was discontinued in 1938, but Rootes used the Sunbeam-Talbot brand until 1953.
