Allard is a former British car manufacturer based in the London borough of Clapham . It was founded in 1946 by Sydney Allard as "Allard Motor Company Ltd." founded and existed until 1966. Successor companies reactivated the brand several times in the following period.

Automobile and company history

Production began as early as 1936 with the "Special" model in very small numbers. American V8 engines were built into other racing one-offs. After the end of World War II , Allard took over the premises of the body manufacturer Southern Motor Company in Clapham. The racing roadster J.1 was presented in 1946. This was followed by the more comfortable K.1 and later the four-seater L and M. All vehicles were equipped with the 3622 cm³ V8 engine from Ford. In 1949 the 5/6-seater P-Saloon was added and in 1950 the J.2 with De Dion rear axle and V8 engine from Mercury, Cadillac or Chrysler. From 1952 there was the P.2 Estate Car Safari and the smaller Palm Beach model series. Possible engines were:

  • 2267 cc engine from the Ford Zephyr (six-cylinder engine)
  • 1508 cc engine from the Ford Consul
  • 3442 cm³ engine from Jaguar (this one later, for the Palm Beach II)

At the other end of the market was the Allard Clipper , a three-wheeled microcar with a plastic body that was powered by a 350 cc motorcycle engine. Only a pilot series of 20 copies was made of the Clipper; serial production did not materialize.

At the end of the 1950s, the market for custom-made special vehicles decreased so much that the company had to cease its activities in the early 1960s. Most of the Allard built in 1830 went to the USA. There were brand restart attempts in 1981 and 1991, but unsuccessful.

The bodies of the pre-war vehicles came from the body builders Coachcraft , Ranalah and Whittingham & Mitchel , those of the first post-war years from Whittingham & Mitchel and Paramount Sheet Metal .

As a further production facility, Allard Motor Co Ltd. Whittingham & Mitchel's manufacturing facilities at 126 New King's Road, Fulham , SW 6 London, when the coachbuilder moved to Surrey in the early post-war years .

Between 1937 and September 1939, 12 Allard vehicles were built, only seven in 1946 and 173 in 1947. In the following four years 432, 265 and 305 or 337 automobiles were produced, in 1952 and 1953 only 132 and 123 vehicles, respectively, and then only 44 in total In the British market, Allard suffered most from the Jaguar XK 120 presented in 1948 , which shifted the export quota from seven percent in 1949 to 97 percent in 1953.

Allard Motor Works from Montreal, Canada, has been using the same brand name for individually designed sports vehicles since the late 1990s .
