history

The 1960s

The Essen Motor Show took place for the first time in 1968 under the title 1st International Sports and Racing Car Exhibition Essen . The inventor of the event was the then 25-year-old automobile enthusiast Wolfgang Schöller, who still functions as the event's coordinator today. His idea was to have the exhibition take place at the end of the motorsport year and in particular to show the winning cars of the season. On November 2nd, 1968, the first exhibition opened on 7000 m² of exhibition space. The success of the first exhibition exceeded expectations. Among the guests of honor was the racing star of the time, Graham Hill , who won the Formula 1 world championship one day after the opening of the Essen exhibition in Mexico. A total of 57,000 visitors came.

The 1970s

After the first fair, contacts were made with the then Formula 1 racing driver Jochen Rindt , who organized his own racing car show in Vienna . For 1970 it was planned to intensify the cooperation with Jochen Rindt. The title of the exhibition was in Jochen-Rindt-Show - Int. Sports and racing car exhibition in Essen changed. On September 5, 1970, just under three months before the opening, he had a fatal accident in Monza . Nevertheless, the fair was carried out as planned under the new title. The number of visitors doubled compared to the previous year to almost 125,000, the exhibition area increased to 25,000 m². Nina Rindt, Jochen Rindt's wife, was still available to the trade fair and worked as a consultant for the Essen Motor Show until 2005. In 1972 the exhibition area had grown to 34,000 m² with almost 150,000 visitors. In 1973 the number of visitors fell to 84,600, as it was in the time of the oil price crisis and car-free Sundays . The racing drivers Rolf Stommelen and Ronnie Peterson performed . 1978 saw a new record with 160,000 visitors. This year the title of the exhibition in Int. Motor Show Essen changed because the previously independent motorcycle show at Messe Essen was integrated into the sports and racing car exhibition .

The 1980s

In 1982 a separate exhibition area for oldtimers and classic cars was added. Also new this year was the Show Center , a presentation area for historic automobiles, design studies and extravagant means of transport. The exhibition area had increased to 65,000 m². In 1984 over 200,000 visitors came for the first time. The ADAC has been the ideal sponsor of the Essen Motor Show since 1987. In 1988, 332,800 visitors came.

The 1990s

In 1990 Messe Essen was expanded again so that 90,000 m² were now available. The number of visitors exceeded the 350,000 mark for the first time. In 1992 the tuning area was expanded together with the VDAT (Association of German Automobile Tuners), and Halls 10/11, in which the first motor show had taken place, now became the VDAT Salon . Since 1996 the event has been called Essen Motor Show International .

Since 2000

The new millennium started with a renewed expansion for the fair, which now only appears as an Essen Motor Show . A new exhibition hall was put into operation, increasing the exhibition area to more than 100,000 m². At the same time, the Hallo, wie geht's evening, took place for the first time , an evening that has taken place annually since then, where former racing drivers, rally drivers and sports bosses meet and to which more than 200 "alumni" now travel. In 2001 the 400,000 mark was exceeded for the first time with 409,200 visitors, in 2004 there were 416,500 visitors. Since then, the number of visitors has leveled off between around 360,000 and 400,000. At the same time, the exhibition changed: Since 2005, so-called eco-tuning ( ecological tuning, i.e. fuel-saving tuning) has also played an important role. In 2006 the Motor Sport Mile was added in a 250-meter-long hall, a central meeting point in the trade fair for active motorsport enthusiasts and fans. In 2007 the Essen Motor Show took place for the 40th time and ran under the motto 40 years of automotive passion . More than 350,000 visitors came to this anniversary fair. In Hall 1A, the Essen Showground opened its own party area for the first time in the Essen Motor Show. It replaced the show center . In 2008, Hall 6 was declared a pure motorsport hall, and a drift course was set up in the neighboring Hall 7.

Today the Essen Motor Show is the second largest vehicle fair after the IAA and at the same time the largest annual event of its kind in Germany. In the ranking of the trade fairs in Germany as a whole, the Essen Motor Show ranks 6th after the IAA , Bauma , Agritechnica , the Mannheimer Maimarkt and the International Green Week Berlin .
