Atlantic Congress Hotel Essen

In 1893 there was a first trade exhibition in the Essen hall . The beginnings on today's Norbertstraße lie in what was then known as the Essen Trade Show , which was founded as a GmbH on April 21, 1913 by twelve private shareholders . 200 exhibitors presented themselves on 5000 square meters of exhibition space in the main building erected at that time, which stretched over the area of today's forecourt of the Grugahalle and the property of today's Hotel Atlantic. In 1921, the non-profit association for the exploitation of the Essen exhibition grounds GmbH became the operator. At this time, to the west behind the main building, which was erected in 1913, exhibition hall V was built, on the foundation of which the Grugahalle has stood since 1958 . In the exhibition hall V, the largest hall of the pre-war fair, the 2nd Rhenish Evangelical Church Congress took place in June 1926 . After being renamed Gemeinnützige Ausstellunggesellschaft mbH (GAG) in 1934 , the exhibition grounds were partially confiscated during the Nazi era .

In December 1937, the newly built artificial ice rink in Essen opened on the exhibition grounds . The closed hall had an ice surface of 1,800 square meters and offered 4,000 grandstand seats. Ice hockey games and figure skating competitions were held, and there were daily running times for the general public. A restaurant for 300 people, which also had club rooms for another 400 guests, had a view of the ice.

During World War II , the exhibition grounds were finally destroyed by Allied air raids in 1944.

Development after the war

The first exhibition after the war was the Dach und Fach trade fair in 1949 , which was dedicated to the topic of reconstruction and attracted 600,000 visitors. The non-profit exhibition company was renamed in 1971 to the exhibition and trade fair company in Essen (AMGE) . One year later, after Hall 6 was completed, the total exhibition area was around 50,000 square meters. In 1966 the 14th annual exhibition of the German Association of Artists took place in the exhibition halls with over 200 participating artists. This was followed in 1976 by the commissioning of Hall 12 with a further 8,000 square meters. After a new two-story exhibition hall was completed in 1980, the total exhibition area was around 60,000 square meters. The grounds have been operated by Messe Essen GmbH since 1982 . This was followed in 1983 by the inauguration of the exhibition building at the east entrance with new Hall 2 and in 1990 that of Halls 1 and 1A, with which the exhibition now had around 90,000 square meters of total exhibition space. In 1998, with the establishment of CCE GmbH & Co. KG, the congress activities were outsourced. Hall 3, built in 2000 according to plans by the Italian architect Mario Bellini, is an architectural specialty with its characteristic nose cone. The hall, which is over 230 meters long and up to 69 meters wide, is up to 15 meters high and is the longest column-free hall in Europe. Their usable area is 17,000 square meters. In 2004, the largest connected lead-glass art window entitled Energy by Jörg Immendorff was installed in the Galeria .

The Atlantic Congress Hotel Essen , northeast of the Grugahalle, opened on January 7, 2010 . This trade fair hotel, which costs around 30 million euros, has 248 rooms as well as a 1,200 square meter conference area, a restaurant with an outdoor terrace, a fitness and wellness area and an underground car park.

2014: referendum against the renovation of the fair

Messe Essen (2013)

On January 19, 2014, the citizens of Essen were called upon to vote by referendum on the repeal of the resolution of the City of Essen Council of July 17, 2013 on the planned renovation of the fair. The initiators of the referendum were Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen and Die Linke , who had doubts about compliance with the city's budget of 123 million euros and warned that investments would then no longer be possible for urgent projects in the social field and education. Furthermore, they doubted that the fair would represent a correspondingly high economic factor for the city. In return, the council groups SPD , CDU , FDP and the Essen Citizens' Alliance , the then Mayor Reinhard Paß (SPD), all DGB trade unions and the majority of the trade associations in Essen were in favor of the fair renovation.

According to the preliminary official final result, with a turnout of 28.8 percent, 50.4 percent voted against the planned renovation of the fair. The minimum number of votes of 45,690 votes was achieved. In detail, 66,066 citizens voted against and 65,104 citizens in favor of the conversion.

2016 to 2019: Exhibition renovation

After the referendum of January 2014, it was decided to rebuild the fair on a smaller scale. Work began on May 2, 2016 with the groundbreaking ceremony . This fair renovation took place during ongoing operations until September 2019 and cost around 88.6 million euros. There has been a new reception area since November 2017. The large number of 18 small, partly two-story exhibition halls was reduced to eight large, ground-level halls, with the total exhibition area of 110,000 square meters being retained.

In the first construction phase, a new glass reception area of around 2000 square meters was built at the east entrance, which, with its large canopy, enables a covered path to the Messe Ost / Gruga underground station . At the same time, the old exhibition halls 9 and 9.1 were closed in order to create the northern part of the new hall 6. On November 28, 2017, after a construction period of around 18 months, the foyer was officially opened by Lord Mayor Thomas Kufen and NRW Minister of Economic Affairs, Andreas Pinkwart . In addition, new congress rooms, the administrative wing and the first half of the new exhibition hall 6 had been completed by then.

The second construction phase, which lasted until April 2018, included the demolition of exhibition halls 4 and 4A, which was completed in 2017, and the area was redesigned as a logistics area. The old hall 5 also fell, in the place of which the southern part of the new hall 6 was built. Above Hall 6 is the newly designed Business Club of the trade fair with a view of Hall 6, which replaces the former trade fair lounge.

The third construction phase from April to August 2018 was planned for the demolition of the two-story Halls 7.1, 8 and 8.1. There followed the construction of the new hall 4 and the southern part of the new hall 5. In addition, the existing halls were modernized and received new air conditioning, sanitary facilities and energy supply.

The fourth construction phase from September 2018 to September 2019 was planned for the completion of Hall 5 with its northern part. This was followed by a new numbering of the now eight exhibition halls.

On September 24, 2019, the last exhibition hall was officially inaugurated by the Lord Mayor Thomas Kufen. This means that the entire renovation of the fair stayed within budget and schedule.
