The underground station Messe Ost / Gruga is an underground light rail station of the Essen Stadtbahn in the Essen district of Rüttenscheid near the exhibition center and the Gruga . It is the southernmost station of the Essen Stadtbahn in the tunnel, but not the southernmost tunnel station in Essen. This is the underground station Florastraße on the tram route to Bredeney .
Location and structure
The underground station has two tracks with a central platform. They can be reached via stairs, escalators and barrier-free with an elevator system through a total of six entrances.
history
On June 1, 1986, the Messe Ost / Gruga tram station was opened as part of the commissioning of the subterranean section of the southern route between Philharmonie / Saalbau and Messe / Bredeney for the U11 tram lines as well as the 101 and 107 tram lines , which branch off at Martinstrasse underground station . The U11 tram runs to the exhibition center and the trams to Bredeney. Before that, tram line 111 ran along the B 224 . It has been replaced by the U11 since the tunnel was built.
service
The city station is now served by the U11 line. Like the rest of the local public transport, it is served by the Ruhrbahn .

Planning
On the part of the city of Essen, there are various considerations to drive the southern route with a uniform system. For cost reasons, these plans have been put on hold.
