The Philharmonie underground station is the oldest underground light rail station on the Essen light rail . It is located in Essen's southern district near the philharmonic hall in the Essen hall that gives it its name . It is the northernmost station on the southern route, which is used by both the standard-gauge Essen Stadtbahn and the meter-gauge Essen tram in a tunnel position.
Location and structure
The underground station is located under Huyssenallee near the Philharmonie. It has two tracks with side platforms. They can be reached via stairs and escalators through a total of four entrances. Since the tracks are used by both standard-gauge light rail vehicles and meter-gauge trams, three - rail tracks have been built. The platforms are 80 cm high so that only high-floor vehicles can be used. There is a siding for standard-gauge vehicles north of the station.
history
The underground station was opened with the name Saalbau on October 5th, 1967 in the course of the first 522-meter-long Essen tunnel. This was used to underpass the Friedrichstraße / Hohenzollernstraße, the former B1 . It was used by the tram lines to Rüttenscheid and on to Bredeney , Rellinghausen via Stadtwaldplatz and to Gruga .
Before the opening of the line leading to the main station , the line had to be taken out of service in order to dismantle the provisional ramp north of the station and thus enable a connection to the continuing tunnel. The reopening was when the Essen Stadtbahn went into operation in May 1977.
In the 1980s, the southern route was built under Rüttenscheider Strasse between Saalbau and Rampe Bredeneyer Strasse with a branch to the Grugastadion. This went into operation on June 1, 1986. Before the opening of this tunnel extension, the Saalbau station had to be taken out of service again in order to be able to dismantle a ramp, this time the southern one, and to raise the platforms to their current height. Originally they were tram level.
Since the tram route to Rellinghausen via Stadtwaldplatz was discontinued in the course of the opening of the tunnel on the southern route, the tram lines 101, 107 and 127 to Bredeney and the then newly established tram line U11 to the Grugastadion ran on this route.
designation
The station was opened under the name Saalbau . After the hall building in Essen was converted into the Philharmonie, the station was named Philharmonie / Saalbau in 2004 . The addition of the hall building was then dropped at a later date.
service
The Stadtbahnhof is now served by the Essen Stadtbahn U11 line and the 108 tram line. During rush hour, there are also tram lines 107 in the underground station. Like the rest of the public transport in Essen, it is operated by the Ruhrbahn .
The aboveground stop of the same name is not used in the bus network during the day. The underground station is closed at night and the above-ground stop is used for the Ruhrbahn night bus routes.

Conversion to achieve accessibility
The underground station did not have an elevator system , this is to be retrofitted.
The renovation work began on December 10, 2018. By October 2019, around a third of the platforms for low-floor vehicles had been lowered to 24 cm. In order to ensure step-free entry for the light rail vehicles, the tracks in the high-floor area are lowered by 10 cm, so that a platform height of 92 cm is achieved here. In addition, the station will receive elevators and new fire protection technology. The work should be completed in summer 2020.
