At the beginning of the 20th century, Boujdour was only a small fishing village with around 1,000 inhabitants. The largely immigrated population consists mostly of members of various Berber tribes from the Atlas Mountains ; however, the predominant language spoken is Moroccan Arabic .

economy

The inhabitants of earlier times lived mainly from fishing and the caravan trade with sub-Saharan Africa . The deployment of the military and the establishment of Boujdour Province in 1976 also created jobs. Since the 1990s, individual tourism has also played an - albeit insignificant - role in the city's economic life.

history

Cape Bojador was an important landmark at the time of the Portuguese voyages of discovery , which was considered impassable for a long time and could only be overcome by Gil Eanes in 1434 . The area has been administered by Spain since the 1880s (see Spanish Sahara and Spanish West Africa ); Spain withdrew its troops stationed here in 1975/76 - as a result, Morocco occupied the entire region in the Green March and shortly afterwards created new provinces.

Attractions

The mostly newly built city has no historically or culturally significant sights.
