The Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region ( Arabic العيون - الساقية الحمراء) is one of the 12 regions of Morocco that were newly created after an administrative reform in 2015 and extends largely in the Moroccan-occupied Western Sahara in the south of the kingdom. The capital of the region is the city of Laayoune .

population

Around 368,000 people (mostly of Berber or nomadic descent) live in the second largest region of Morocco with an area of ​​around 140,000 km² . Around 22,000 people live in rural areas ( communes rurales ), around 344,000 people live in cities ( municipalités ) - mainly in Laâyoune.
