Scheme of the administrative structure of Morocco

The 12 regions of Morocco ( Arabic جهات المغرب, DMG ǧihāt al-maġrib ) form the second highest administrative level of the Kingdom of Morocco after the state and its ministries ; they have economic and cultural powers and thus constitute an instrument of political decentralization . With the decree of February 20, 2015, they were reorganized and reduced from 16 to 12 now. Subordinate to them are the 13 prefectures and 62 provinces of the country, which in turn consist of arrondissements ( paschaliks ) and districts ( caïdats ); the lowest administrative level are the cities ( municipalités ) and rural communities ( communes rurales ).
