Meknès-Tafilalet ( Arabic مكناس تافيلالت; tamazight ⵎⴽⵏⴰⵙ-ⵜⴰⴼⵉⵍⴰⵍⵜ) was one of the 16 regions of Morocco until the administrative reform of 2015 and was located in the north of the kingdom. In the entire area of Meknès-Tafilalet in 2004, 2,141,527 people lived in a total area of 79,210 km² at the census. The capital of the region was the city of Meknes .
Geography and history
The geographically and sociologically rather inconsistent area was connected by caravan routes (see Sidschilmasa ) since antiquity and especially in the Middle Ages . The highest point is the up to 3747 m high Jbel Ayachi massif near Midelt ; many mountains reach heights of over 2000 m (e.g. Jbel Hebri and Jbel Mischliffen ). The desert-like flat area of the Tafilalet is also about 800 to 1000 m high.
Important cities
Important cities are from north to south: Moulay Idris , El Hajeb and Khénifra northwest of the Middle Atlas , Azrou , Ifrane and Midelt in the middle of the Atlas Mountains , and Errachidia , Erfoud and Rissani on the edge of the Sahara .
The Berber town of Imilchil in the High Atlas , famous far beyond Morocco for its marriage market, also belongs to the Meknès-Tafilalet region.
