Ifrane (from the Macirean ⵉⴼⵔⴰⵏ Ifran , “caves”, Arabic إفران, DMG Ifrān ) is a city with about 15,000 inhabitants in northern Morocco in the Fès-Meknès region . The modern well-kept small town in the mountains of the Middle Atlas is a popular summer resort and an equally popular winter sports location for the Moroccan middle and upper class.

location

Ifrane is located at an altitude of about 1650 meters, 65 km (driving distance) south of Fez and 18 kilometers northeast of Azrou . Nearby are the Ifrane National Park with the two extinct volcanic craters of Jbel Mischliffen and Jbel Hebri .

Population, Economy and History

The square was formerly nothing more than a summer pasture for the sheep and goat herds of the semi-nomadic ( transhumance ) Berber population of the surrounding area. Only gradually did a permanent settlement develop, which probably also functioned as a station for the trade caravans coming via Midelt from southern Morocco (e.g. Sijilmassa ).

During the protectorate period , the French expanded the centrally located place into the summer capital and a military garrison .

Today's provincial capital offers many jobs in public administration. There is also a university and tourism also plays a not insignificant role.

They speak both Berber dialects , which belong to the Tamazight language group , as well as Moroccan Arabic and French.

Attractions

  • Due to the surrounding and mostly wooded mountain landscape and the gable roofs of the houses, which became fashionable during the French protectorate , the city gains an almost European appearance, which is underlined by well-tended boulevards and beautiful parks. Wealthy Moroccans from the north-west of the country - including the king - have a second home here.
  • The Al-Akhawayn University, which opened in 1995, is an elite public university that was jointly founded by the Moroccan and Saudi Arabian kings and is financed by collecting tuition fees. The curriculum follows the American model and takes place in English. The spacious university campus is architecturally based on the traditional campus universities in England and the Northeast of the USA.
  • A mosque ( Mosquée d'Al Akhawayn ) belongs to the university campus , which in some respects is a scaled-down replica of the Hassan II mosque in Casablanca .
