The Kettwig Station is a S-Bahn station in Essen district of Kettwig . It is located on the Ruhr Valley Railway between Düsseldorf and Essen and is regularly served by the S 6 line. The station building from 1873 has been a listed building since 1987.
history
The first Kettwig train station was built in 1872. In the following year, the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft started passenger traffic on the Düsseldorf – Kettwig – Kupferdreh line . The first provisional station building was dismantled in 1875 and rebuilt as a provisional station building in Wermelskirchen . In the same year, the single-track Lower Ruhr Valley Railway to Mülheim an der Ruhr was built and put into operation. The entrance building, which is now a listed building, was built in a late classicist form as early as 1872/1873 . The passenger trains to and from Mülheim ended bluntly at a platform west of the station building.
In 1887 a second line was built in the direction of Werden with a separate Ruhr crossing .
In 1905 the station was upgraded to 1st class. Now express trains also stopped in Kettwig, as did the Essen – Basel express train . In order to be able to reach platform 2 better, a people tunnel was built.
In 1926, after a construction period of more than 13 years, the Niederbergbahn from Kettwig Stausee via Heiligenhaus to Velbert was completed and at the same time a third bridge was connected to the station.
On April 10, 1945, all three bridges were blown up by the German Wehrmacht in order to stop American troops approaching from the north. Rail traffic was resumed soon after the war ended. Trains from the direction of Düsseldorf ended at the auxiliary station in Pusch (now the Kettwig Stausee stop ). Trains from Mülheim ended at Kettwig station in front of the bridge.
After the Düsseldorf bridge was rebuilt in 1951, there were also through trains on the Ruhr Valley Railway. The bridge of the lower Ruhr Valley Railway was not rebuilt, so that the Kettwig station could no longer be reached from this direction.
The S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr has served the station with the S 6 line since 1968 . In the same year, the new DrS2 signal box Kgf for the Kettwig station was put into operation, which replaced the previous signal boxes Kgb (dispatcher) and OF ( switch keeper ). Kgf has been in remote control from Essen Hbf Ef since 1977 . However, it can still be manned on site in the event of a fault.
In 1977 the Kettwig train station was closed as an independent office, also due to the incorporation of Kettwig to Essen. The station concourse was closed.
The trains of line S 6 run as scheduled on tracks 1 (direction Düsseldorf / Cologne) and 2 (direction Essen), track 3 is used for overhauls, early turns or deviating trips of trains in the event of disruptions or construction work, special trains and museum traffic. All other tracks have been removed.
During the summer holidays of 2012, the station was made barrier-free , for which the platforms were raised and delimited over a length of 150 m to 96 cm, and two elevators to the passenger tunnel were built.

The Kettwig train station is on the edge of Kettwig outside of the buildings on the Ruhrtalstrasse to Essen- Werden and thus inconvenient to the center of the district. Since it is also between a mountain wall and the nearby bank of the Ruhr, there are hardly any opportunities to develop anything around it.
From Essen-Kettwig, the bus routes 151 to Mülheim an der Ruhr , 772 and 774 to Heiligenhaus and the Kettwig citizens' bus run from the central Kettwiger Markt stop . They serve the Kettwiger Markt stop and the Ringstraße stop , which is located at the eastern end of the Kettwiger center at the main traffic intersection. From this junction, about 530 meters from Kettwig train station, the three arterial roads go in the direction of Essen-Werden, the district of Kettwig in front of the bridge and on to Heiligenhaus / Mülheim- Mintard and Mülheim- Saarn or Ratingen-Breitscheid and Lintorf , as well as the third in the direction Mülheim- Menden , Essen- Schuir . The buses leave Kettwig via these arterial roads in all directions (except to Mintard, Saarn and Breitscheid). Lines 151, 772, 774 as well as the citizens' bus only run direct connections without drop-offs and do not serve Kettwig station. 200 meters south of this intersection is the railway line that crosses the freight road there. In addition to the railway line, the “Kettwiger Ruhrbogen” development area has been built on the former freight loading point since 2015.

Planning
According to the local transport plan (NVP) for the years 2008–2012, the plan was to move the station closer to the Kettwig Bridge in the Güterstraße area so that it could be better connected to the buses at the Ringstraße stop. However, for reasons not explained in the local transport plan, this project was rejected. In this area, the city of Essen has once again had the Kettwiger Ruhrbogen built between the S-Bahn line and the Ruhr , a housing estate with a view of the water, for which this project also provides good access in addition to the networking options in public transport and the shorter distances to the city center.
The city of Essen is planning to pierce the underpass to the Ruhr in order to connect the station to the Ruhrtalweg.
