The Hösel train station is one of two train stations with passenger traffic in the city of Ratingen in North Rhine-Westphalia and a station of the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn . Its former reception building is a listed building.

location

The train station is located in the Hösel district of Ratingen and is particularly important for commuters in the Essen and Düsseldorf areas . It is particularly important for the neighboring town of Heiligenhaus , which no longer has its own rail link and is directly connected to the train station via the B 227 and a bus line.

history

Former reception building, now used as a restaurant

The station was built with the Ruhr Valley Railway in the Düsseldorf – Essen-Werden section between 1870 and 1872. West of the platform and the reception building there was a siding to the locomotive shed and to the goods shed of the Heiligenhaus – Hösel small railway . The steam-powered narrow-gauge railway was discontinued in 1923, and passenger traffic is now served by the 770 bus. To the east of the platform and the former level crossing, there was a siding to the Hösel & Saar wallpaper factory . This connection, like the connection to the narrow-gauge railway, has been dismantled today.

The bridge with a DB class 143 locomotive

Until 2012, there was a level crossing with half barriers at Hösel station , over which the federal road 227 crossed the tracks, which directly connects the cities of Heiligenhaus and Velbert with the Breitscheid motorway junction . Since both the railway line with the S 6 every 20 minutes and the main road with over 1000 vehicles every day are very busy, backlogs arose again and again due to the level crossing. Therefore, Straßen.NRW decided to replace the level crossing with a bridge. This was completed in 2012.

Today there are no structural remains of the Hösel level crossing, as the last remains of the barrier were removed during the renovation of the railway line between Ratingen Ost and Essen-Werden in the summer of 2014 to make room for the track construction vehicles.

Inside the station, about 500 meters northeast of the station building, is the formerly double-track Höseler Tunnel . Since electrification in 1968, this can only be used on a single track. The importance of the Hösel station in terms of rail operations is now limited to the operation of the necessary signal systems for the single-track tunnel section. The associated interlocking systems are located within the reception building and are remotely controlled from Essen main station .

The listed reception building is now used as a restaurant.

Connection

The Hösel S-Bahn station has two side platforms with access at the northern end of the platform. Directly next to the train station there is a park-and-ride car park and a bus station , which is served by four bus routes, one of which is a taxi-bus route . The bus routes are operated by the Rheinbahn .

Renovation from 2019

In April 2019, the municipality of Ratingen began building a new bus station with four bus platforms below the bridge, which was completed in 2012, and the forecourt is to be redesigned in 2020. In October, Deutsche Bahn started to modernize the station. The platforms are to be raised to 96 centimeters above the upper edge of the rails in order to provide stepless access to the S-Bahn vehicles. To make the station barrier-free, elevators are to be installed on both platforms, one of which will be financed by the municipality and one by Deutsche Bahn. A combined platform is to be built on the south side , for this purpose the existing platform will be relocated a few meters in the direction of Essen to the new bus station. In addition, the wooden roofing of the house platform is being renovated and new guidance and passenger information systems are to help passengers find their way around. The renovation work should be completed in summer 2020.
