The Höseler Tunnel is a railway tunnel in the Hösel district of Ratingen in North Rhine-Westphalia .
The tunnel is located on the Ratingen Ost - Kettwig section of the Ruhr Valley Railway, built between 1870 and 1876, northeast of the Hösel station . The predominantly double-track line is single-tracked in the tunnel area. The tunnel runs from the west in a right-hand arc with an initial radius of 1250 meters, at the eastern tunnel portal the radius is 900 meters.
history
The Düsseldorf - Essen-Werden - Essen-Überruhr section of the Ruhr Valley Railway was built between 1870 and 1872. In Essen-Überruhr, the connection to the section to Hagen, which was already in operation, took place. When it was built, the Höseler Tunnel was approx. 420 meters long. The Düsseldorf - Kettwig line was built on two tracks from the start. Despite the narrow construction, the route in the tunnel was carried out in two tracks. In 1915 the tunnel was shortened by 100 meters due to the risk of collapse. In 1968 the line was electrified . Because of its vault-like construction, a double-track route in the tunnel was not possible. The overhead line could not be built with the necessary distance to the track. Since then, there have been switches on both sides of the tunnel that guide traffic on a track through the tunnel.
