The Düsseldorf Volksgarten stop is an S-Bahn station in the North Rhine-Westphalian capital of Düsseldorf in the Oberbilk district . It is located on the Cologne – Duisburg railway line and belongs to station category 5. In addition to the three S-Bahn lines S1, S6 and S68, there is also an option to change to line 706 at the Düsseldorf tram stop of the same name. , Dropouts and switchers at around 10,000 to 15,000 per working day. This makes it one of the six most heavily frequented S-Bahn stations in the city of Düsseldorf. It belongs to the tariff area of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr and is located in tariff area 53 Düsseldorf-Süd.
location
The stop is on the Cologne – Duisburg railway, about 2 km south of Düsseldorf Central Station .
The stopping point is geographically located at the interface between the Düsseldorf districts of Friedrichstadt , Oberbilk and Bilk . It is located in an elevated position between Oberbilker Allee, which crosses the railway line, and Kruppstrasse. To the south of the platform are the TuRU Düsseldorf sports facilities and the stadium located there on Feuerbachstrasse . On the opposite side of Kruppstrasse is the entrance to the Volksgarten , which is also the namesake for this station. This was part of the Federal Horticultural Show in 1987 . The Volksgarten S-Bahn station, as well as the Düsseldorf-Oberbilk stop following in the direction of Cologne, played a central role in connecting it to local public transport , as one of three main entrances was set up at both locations.
In addition, the Düsseldorf-Süd tax office, north of the tracks, also contributes to the high number of passengers at this point.
history
The Düsseldorf Volksgarten stop was built as a pure S-Bahn station. There was no previous station or stop at this point before. The new stop went into operation at the same time as the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn opened. This took place in September 1967 on the route between the Düsseldorf-Garath and Ratingen Ost stops . The new S-Bahn line was the beginning of the first new S-Bahn system in Germany after the Second World War .
In the course of the Federal Horticultural Show held in 1987, the equipment of the S-Bahn station was expanded. Two larger roof structures were installed in the western and eastern areas of the platform. Since then, they have offered passengers protection from rain.
As part of a modernization at several Düsseldorf S-Bahn stations, the breakpoint was equipped with new train destination displays with drop-leaf displays at the beginning of the 2000s .
Railway system
The S-Bahn station has a central platform with access to Oberbilker Allee and Kruppstraße or the street Auf'm Hennekamp. However, these are only designed as fixed stairs and not as escalators . Since there is no elevator system , the station is not barrier-free .
The design of the platform is very simple. In addition to the roof structures already mentioned, which briefly follow the two entrances, there is only one other covered waiting area. However, this also protects against wind and rain falling from the side with wall cladding. The rest of the platform is designed with individual benches, light masts and station signs. The floor is only asphalted and the necessary safety distance to the platform edge is marked by a painted line. There is therefore no guidance system for the blind in the entire platform area.
Through video surveillance and an emergency call or information column, the S-Bahn station is part of the 3-S system of Deutsche Bahn, which has a regional headquarters at Düsseldorf Central Station.
The two tracks of the S-Bahn are run alongside the S-Bahn station without any tracks assigned to it, so that one does not have to speak of a station , but of a stopping point . This is accompanied both north and south by three additional tracks that are assigned to regional and long-distance traffic. In terms of the layout of the stop, it corresponds to a through station .
traffic
The Volksgarten S-Bahn station is located on the south-eastern branch of the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn in the Düsseldorf city area.
All lines operating on this route serve the stop. In addition to the transfer options between the three S-Bahn lines, there are other transfer connections to a tram line, which stops at a stop along the Auf'm Hennekamp street and connects to the Düsseldorf local transport network.
In the north, the three lines provide the connection to the neighboring cities of Essen , Ratingen and Wuppertal as well as the districts of Rath , Unterrath and Gerresheim . There is also a direct connection to Düsseldorf Airport and Düsseldorf Central Station, which is connected to the Düsseldorf light rail network . To the south, the districts of Oberbilk, Eller , Reisholz , Benrath , Garath and Hellerhof are connected. The lines then lead beyond the city to Hilden and Solingen , or Langenfeld , Leverkusen and Cologne .
The city center and other eastern and southern parts of the city can be reached by tram line 706. Line 706 runs all day long at 10-minute intervals.
Due to its central location, also on an important traffic route, combined with the link between the various modes of transport, the S-Bahn station is the location of a car sharing station.
All S-Bahn lines that run here are operated by the Düsseldorf-based DB Regio NRW on behalf of the Rhine-Ruhr transport association, in whose tariff area they are also located. Cars from the 422 series are used on the S1 and S6 lines, as well as the 420 series cars on the S68 line .
The S-Bahn lines S1 and S6 each run every 20 minutes, so that the stopping point is reached every 10 minutes due to the double operation. In the rush hour the S68 also runs, also every 20 minutes.
