Overview of the tram network (valid since 02/21/2016)

The Düsseldorf tram is part of the local public transport system in the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf . The seven lines in service today are operated by the Rheinbahn . In addition to the bus system, the urban railway and the S-Bahn, they represent the fourth mode of transport and, like these, belong to the Rhein-Ruhr transport association .

history

Tram cars 2501 and 2432 ( type GT6 )

The history of the Düsseldorf tram goes back to the year 1876. Since then, the system has developed from a horse-drawn tram in the early days to a tram known today . Parts of the network operated by the tram have been converted into a light rail system since the 1970s . The tracks have a gauge of 1435 millimeters ( standard gauge ).

In the early years, the horse tram and tram in Düsseldorf were operated by different companies. The first line of the Rheinische Bahngesellschaft was the Schnellbahn Düsseldorf – Krefeld, called K-Bahn , which opened on December 15, 1898. In the years 1899 and 1900 the Düsseldorf-Duisburger Kleinbahn opened the tram route from Düsseldorf to Duisburg. On April 1, 1938, the Düsseldorf-Duisburger Kleinbahn was dissolved and taken over by the Duisburg trams and the Rheinbahn. The Benrath network was operated by the Bergische Kleinbahn and bought by the city of Düsseldorf on October 1, 1911 and leased to the Rheinbahn. In December 1921, the Düsseldorf tram finally merged with the Rheinbahn, which today operates the Düsseldorf tram and light rail . On April 1, 1937, the Rheinbahn also bought the Mettmann tram .

On August 7, 1971, Stadtwerke Neuss closed their last tram line 1 and the Rheinbahn took over the route used by line 16 in Neuss as well as all remaining four- and six-axle vehicles.

business

Current tram network

With the opening of the Wehrhahn Line on February 20, 2016, there were extensive route changes. Since then, only seven tram lines have operated. Three lines (703, 712, 713) as well as the Karolingerplatz – Benrath section of the previous line 701 go into the light rail network .

Since then, line 701 has been running from Karolingerplatz on the route of the previous line 706 to Am Steinberg , line 706 took over from Graf-Adolf-Platz on the routes of the previous lines 704 and 708 to Hamm, line 704 runs from the main station on the The previous route of the previous line 707 to the university, the line 707 from the main station on the route of the previous lines 708 and 719 to the Medienhafen. At the request of politicians, line 708, which was originally supposed to be discontinued, will be tested for an initial year, from the main train station it will then run to the police headquarters. Line 715 was given the new line number 705, line 719 was integrated into line 709 and consolidates the offer in rush hour between Staufenplatz and Südfriedhof to a 5-minute cycle.

The Jan-Wellem-Platz stop has been renamed Schadowstraße , from here the lines 701, 705 and 706 run directly to Berliner Allee instead of through the old town. The extension of line 701 to the ISS Dome went into operation on January 7, 2018.

NF6

In 1996, on its 100th anniversary, the Rheinbahn began equipping the Düsseldorf tram with low-floor vehicles. The NF6 wagon type was procured as the first model . This was produced by Siemens and Düwag and is the first low-floor tram in the city of Düsseldorf. The vehicles are 28.62 meters long and have a body width of 2.40 meters. The vehicle has space for 76 + 1 passengers in seats and another 79 standing up. The last of the 48 vehicles was completed in 1999 and put into operation in 2000. The NF6 have the vehicle numbers 2101–2148.

NF10

The NF10 is also a low-floor vehicle that was produced in the Siemens and Düwag plants from 2000–2002. At 39.98 meters, it is the longest one-piece tram in the service of the Rheinbahn. There is space for 234 passengers, which are spread over seven car parts. The top speed of 65 km / h is hardly reached in city traffic. The vehicle is used on lines 701, 707 and 709. The NF10 is popularly known as the "Silver Arrow". The vehicle numbers are 2001–2036.

NF8

The NF8 low-floor tram was produced in 2003 at the Siemens and Kiepe plants. This type of car is similar to its predecessor model NF10 both technically and externally. The only difference lies in the number of car parts: Instead of seven, it consists of just five car parts and is therefore also known as the “little silver arrow”. With eight axles, the NF8 also has two less than the NF10. The vehicle has a total of 56 seats and 112 standing places. The vehicle numbers are 2201–2215.

NF8U

The NF8U is the newest vehicle of the Rheinbahn and was built by Siemens and Kiepe from 2006 to 2007 and from 2010 to 2012 especially for the low-floor subway line. The vehicle, which is 30.40 meters long and 2.40 meters wide, has a top speed of 70 km / h. With a drive power of 400 kilowatts, this speed can also be reached quickly in city traffic.

It owes its designation “Silver Arrow II” to the NF10 vehicle model. There are 170 seats, including 50 + 4 seats. The vehicle numbers are 3301–3376.

Before the opening of the Wehrhahn Line , the vehicle was on the lines 703, 704, 706–709, 712, 713 and 715. Since then, the NF8U are no longer assigned to the tram fleet, but to the light rail vehicles.

Depots

Heerdt depot

Heerdt depot

The depot, which was built between 1928 and 1929, was designed by the Düsseldorf architect Eduard Lyonel Wehner and has been a listed building since 1997. The depot, located in the district of the same name on the Handweiser, has housed - since the route to Neuss main station was exclusively served by light rail vehicles - predominantly light rail vehicles of the B80 and GT8SU series. In addition, individual tram cars that are used on line 709 are stationed in Heerdt. The number of the depot in the vehicle circuit is "H".

Lierenfeld depot

The Lierenfeld depot is located on Lierenfelder Straße and is currently the Rheinbahn's newest depot. It replaced the former Derendorf and Wersten depots. The depot has exits to Erkrather Strasse and Karl-Geusen-Strasse. Its registration number in the vehicle circuit is "LS" (for Lierenfeld rail).

Depot Am Steinberg

Historic tram depot "Am Steinberg"

Until the timetable change on June 12, 2011, this was the oldest depot still in operation. Due to the old age of the depot, it is designed for two-axle railcars and no longer for the wider, low-floor wagons of today. As a result, only the articulated railcars GT8 / 8S and the historic Rheinbahn fleet together with some NF6 were located in the Am Steinberg depot. Only a few tracks were approved for vehicles of the types NF8 / 10 / 8U, GT8SU were only allowed to enter track 8 due to the widened front section - and only from the exit side. Although vehicles of the last-named types were repeatedly found in the tracks of the depot, they were not at home there. Due to these restrictions, the depot lost its right to exist when the last DüWag articulated multiple units were handed in or they were transferred to the old-timer service. With the expansion of the Lierenfeld depot, there was enough space to close the depot.

On June 19, 2011, the depot was adopted with a public festival. The future use was discussed for a long time. The talks included studios for artists and a community center for the Bilk district. With the change in traffic policy by Düsseldorf's new mayor Thomas Geisel, the discussion about the depot was put in a different light. In August 2015, Rheinbahn AG's sales efforts were canceled. Planned network expansions, increased cycle times and the commissioning of the Wehrhahn line mean that more capacities are required in the remaining Heerdt and Lierenfeld depots. These were provided at short notice by the re-commissioning of the workshop hall with tracks 1 to 6, since December 20, 2015, the parts of the vintage car fleet that are not in regular use have been stationed there. The discussion is about reactivating further parts of the depot in order to handle all of the Rheinbahn's old-timer traffic from the Am Steinberg depot. For special trips on Line D, an "S" is used to identify the respective course.

Derendorf depot

The Derendorf depot existed in the north of downtown Düsseldorf until 1992. It was on Münsterstrasse in the immediate vicinity of the Mörsenbroich ice cream .

Depot at Erkrather Strasse

Planned depot

In the original urban railway plans of the 1970s, a new depot in the Itter district was planned. The connection to this should be made via trunk lines 1 and 3. The plans were discussed again in the 1990s. Resistance in the population led to a scaled-down version, which was presented a few years later. This project ultimately failed due to funding. In the meantime, other locations for the foreseeable growing fleet of light rail vehicles were discussed, including locations in the districts of Holthausen and Bilk . The Am Steinberg depot is located in the latter part of the city. The new depot was to be built here in the direct vicinity of a motorway junction. An expansion of the existing depot was also considered at this time. The high financial outlay combined with the lack of funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia led to a more cost-effective solution. The Lierenfeld depot was expanded until 2010.

With the publication of the 2015 annual balance sheet, it became known that the Rheinbahn wanted to sell the Am Steinberg depot. Another use of the small car hall for historic trams should be taken into account. In order to park and maintain vehicles that are still to be procured, which are required by local politicians to expand the range of services or to increase the number of cycles, the Rheinbahn is now going to look for a location for a new depot.

The media harbor should be better reached by tram. Two different variants were considered. After the variant through Hammer Strasse was postponed in 2003 due to resident protests, the tram should now run through Gladbacher Strasse. In addition, it was planned to run a tram from the main train station to the Medienhafen along the harbor basin. This line should be served with vintage cars and be a tourist attraction. However, this line was discarded again due to high construction costs and fears of the hosts at the harbor basin.

In October 2012, the construction of the extension began. The new line runs over Franziusstrasse and Holzstrasse into Kesselstrasse. The new Speditionstraße and Kesselstraße stops were created . These are built on a low-floor level. At the end of the route there is a double-track turning loop. The costs amounted to 6.5 million euros.

After the line went into operation on January 8, 2014, line 719 first ran on the new line. Since the commissioning of the Wehrhahn Line on February 20, 2016 and the restructuring of the line network, Line 707 has now been running on this route.

In summer 2006, the ISS Dome , multifunctional arena and new home ground of the ice hockey club Düsseldorfer EG , was built in Rath . The connection to the Düsseldorf tram network, which had already been planned in advance, through the extension of line 701 beyond the previous terminal in Rath , was put into operation on January 7, 2018. Train

On February 8, 2013, a report appeared in the Rheinische Post, from which it emerged that, after several years of negotiations, the city of Düsseldorf could now buy the last piece of land to finally extend the route of line 701 from the Rather S-Bahn station to the ISS Dome event hall . The construction of the new section is expected to take around a year. The planning for the extension is already in place. The median of Theodorstrasse has already been prepared for the construction of the new tracks. Until the extension is complete, visitors to the ISS Dome would have to take buses from the Rather or Unterrather S-Bahn station to the hall of the ISS Dome. In addition to the connection to the ISS Dome, it is also important that the employees of the companies that are already based on Theodorstrasse or who will soon be able to get to their workplaces as quickly as possible thanks to the new tram extension. According to the report, those responsible at the DEG ice hockey club also support the new extension to the ISS Dome.

In a further article in the Rheinische Post on March 28, 2013, Stephan Keller, the head of the transport department, also presented the schedule after the purchase of the last piece of land: It could take up to six months for the district government to obtain the building permit . The subsequent Europe-wide tender for the construction project, which cost 28 million euros, would also require up to six months. "We are striving for the 701 to finally be able to drive as far as Theodorstrasse by 2015." This date is particularly important because the Wehrhahn line will then also be completed. But it could not be kept either. Instead, construction has now been scheduled from June 2016 to December 2017. On Monday, February 29, 2016, the political course for a tram connection was set. The finance committee released the necessary funds for the extension of line 701. The groundbreaking ceremony for the 30 million project took place on September 29, 2016 in the presence of Mayor Thomas Geisel. The construction was completed in December 2017. From December 17, 2017, the Rheinbahn carried out test drives. Operations on the route began on January 7, 2018.

According to the Düsseldorf local transport plan, it was also planned to extend tram line 707 from Unterrath S-Bahn station to the ISS Dome, so that the ISS Dome would also be connected to the Cologne – Duisburg railway line in the tram network. However, this project was rejected due to the high costs involved in the construction of two new bridges (one over the railroad in the area of Unterrath station and the other in the area of the Düsseldorf-Rath junction ) and other urban planning difficulties. What was also rejected was the extension of the 701 from the ISS Dome to the airport train station .

Planned projects

Several expansion plans are currently being discussed for the near future. Some of these are also recorded in the current local transport plan.

Connection to the university

In addition, line 706 is to be extended from its previous endpoint “Am Steinberg” via Himmelgeister Straße to Universität West, which would once again significantly improve the public transport access to this “campus university”, which was previously well-developed for car traffic.

The common terminal of 706 and U 79 is then expected to be in the central area of the university near the cafeteria, although the time of implementation is still uncertain.

In addition, it is planned to extend tram line 701 in a second expansion phase from the terminal at Am Hülserhof to Ratingen-West . Ratingen-West is a densely built-up district of Ratingen , which is heavily oriented towards Düsseldorf in terms of traffic. Its connection to Düsseldorf will be expanded once again by extending the 701. In the current draft of the Düsseldorf Local Transport Plan 2017, however, this measure was classified as "long-term" with a realization horizon after 2030 Template: future / in 5 years.

Connection to a university of applied sciences

From the Alliance 90 / The Greens was suggested that the line 708 to the campus of the University of Applied Sciences Dusseldorf to extend. You should from the current end point in Düsseltal u. A. be extended through Münsterstraße to Merziger Straße, where the terminus would be expanded. The city administration considers this extension with costs of 1.4 million euros to be too expensive, while the SPD and the Left, along with the Greens, sympathize with the route. The parties intend to enforce the extension in the city council.

The reason for the extension is the planned shutdown of the line, the replacement of which is to be replaced by the new U71 light rail system : Since the residents of the Düsseltal district have run a storm, the " traffic light coalition " intends to at least keep the 708; However, in order to achieve additional traffic value and more attractive public transport for the line, the 708 must be extended, according to the Greens. Initially, however, those parties intend to start a test run of the line to the police headquarters.

The draft of the 2017 local transport plan resulted in an inspection order for the extension of tram line 708 from Heinrichstraße to Spichernplatz. However, this should not be pursued further, as the traffic assessment has shown that no system-typical demand level has been reached and no further optimization options are currently seen.

For this measure, too, an inspection order resulted from the draft of the 2017 local transport plan. The extension of the tram line 705 beyond the current endpoint Vennhauser Allee in Düsseldorf-Eller to Düsseldorf-Reisholz S. should also not be pursued at the moment. Instead, an extension via Vennhauser Allee to Düsseldorf-Gerresheim S is being examined. An extension of the U 75 light rail line was originally considered on this route. However, the previous test has shown that the capacity gained exceeds the demand and a tram connection - if necessary at all - is sufficient.

Trivia

Düsseldorf was one of the few German tram companies that used previously deleted line numbers for short trips or electric cars .
