The University Hospital Düsseldorf (UKD) is located in the south of Düsseldorf . In 29 clinics and 30 institutes around 45,000 inpatients and around 300,000 outpatients are treated annually. The clinic has more than 1200 inpatient beds for this purpose. Around 5,500 people are employed, 1,300 of them in nursing and 800 doctors . Many kinds of facilities are run by themselves (crafts, training centers). The board consists of the medical director, the commercial director, the deputy medical director, the nursing director and the dean of the medical faculty.

history

On July 27, 1907, the general city hospitals were officially opened, followed by the Düsseldorf Academy for Practical Medicine . The director was Oskar Witzel appointed. On the premises were the surgery , internal medicine , paediatrics clinics with Arthur Schloßmann as head doctor, gynecology and obstetrics with Hugo Sellheim as head doctor, infectology with an attached institute for experimental therapy , skin and venereal diseases , ear, nose and throat medicine , Ophthalmology and pathology under the direction of Lubarsch . The psychiatry was located in the Rhineland Provincial and Nursing Institution in Grafenberg .

After the Second World War, the hospital and the academy gained a worldwide reputation in cardiac research, especially as 1952 the cardiac surgeon and Director of the Surgical Clinic from 1946 to 1969, Ernst Derra , using a heart-lung machine , the first operation at the open heart succeeded . In 1958 the new construction of the surgical clinic, at that time one of the most modern clinic buildings in the world, was opened.

After the medical academy had already merged into the newly founded University of Düsseldorf in 1965 , the state of North Rhine-Westphalia also took over the sponsorship of the hospitals on January 1, 1973 , which at that time were renamed the Düsseldorf University Hospital . In the meantime, the University of Düsseldorf has moved into the first new buildings on the campus south of the clinic premises. From 1973 the preclinical and other medical institutes were also located here . The facilities, which were mainly used for clinical care and research, remained on the clinic premises.

A comprehensive modernization of the clinics began in 1985 with the opening of the newly built Medical-Neurological-Radiological Clinic (MNR-Clinic), which also includes the highest building in the clinic. This was followed by the construction of the Center for Children - and Adolescent Medicine at and around the site of the old children's hospital. The modernization process included the new data center at the location of the old boiler house.

In 2013, the German Cancer Aid included the university clinic in the list of top oncological centers for the first time. Associated with this is funding from the University Tumor Center Düsseldorf (UTZ) totaling three million euros for three years.

After a long construction period, the Center for Operative Medicine II was opened as the new center of the clinic in June 2014 . The clinics for ENT, neurosurgery, maxillofacial and plastic facial surgery, trauma and hand surgery as well as orthopedics have been integrated into it. It comprises operating theaters, medical wards including an intensive care unit and the new central emergency room with shock rooms and a helicopter roof landing pad. The opening was originally planned for 2009, but commissioning was not possible due to problems with fire protection. The media called the facility a "ghost clinic". Legal disputes have been announced regarding the executing company Imtech .

criticism

In 2018, the WDR criticized the clinic for not paying enough attention to hygiene and for moving patients from intensive care to normal wards too early. That led to deaths.

Location and development

The fenced-in 40-hectare site is located in the southeast of the Düsseldorf district of Bilk . The northern border is formed by the Moorenstrasse and the Witzelstrasse. Himmelgeister Strasse is to the west and Christophstrasse to the east of the site. The Heinrich Heine University campus connects to the south - separated from the clinic premises by the A 46 running through the university tunnel and a green corridor with pedestrian and cycle paths above the tunnel.

Authorized vehicles can enter the site via two gates - gate B in the north (accessible via Moorenstraße) and gate C in the south (accessible via Universitätsstraße). There are parking spaces for other cars at both gates. Pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users can also enter the site through gate A (old main entrance on Moorenstrasse) and other entrances.

The best way to get to the clinic is via the Uni-Kliniken stop on tram line 704 and subway lines U 71, U 73 and U 83 and bus lines SB 50, 723, 780, 782, 785, 827, NE 6 and NE 7 can be reached. Areas and buildings

All buildings, some of them under monument protection , have the postal address Moorenstraße 5, 40225 Düsseldorf . For a more precise localization of the locations, as on the neighboring university campus, a key consisting of four two-digit numbers separated by dots is used. The left and first number defines the area, the second number the building, the third number the floor and the last number the room number on the floor concerned. All area numbers on the clinic premises start with 1. The following table provides an overview of the areas and buildings.
