The Hanover Medical School is the teaching hospital of the Hanover Medical School . It has a supra-regional catchment area. The University Hospital in the Groß-Buchholz district has 90 wards with 1,518 beds. In 2013, 58,943 inpatients and 452,783 outpatients were treated in the 35 polyclinics. The MHH is Germany's largest transplant center. In 2012, 423 transplants were performed here.

As a university hospital, the house has a large number of departments, and there is an intensive care unit for almost every department. These include some special wards that can only be operated by large clinics.

All stations of the MHH are divided up so that there are a total of six care areas. Almost all intensive care units with the exception of the children's clinic are grouped within the fifth care area.

A total of ten departments operate an intensive care unit for each department / clinic:

  • Internal medicine: Intensive care unit 14 with 14 beds
  • Cardiology: intensive care unit 24 with 9 beds
  • Neurosurgery: Intensive Care Unit 34 with 12 beds
  • Interdisciplinary anesthesiology: intensive care units 44 with 14 beds and 34 with 15 beds
  • Pediatrics: Intensive Care Unit 67 with 14 beds
  • Neonatology: intensive care unit 69 with 7 beds
  • Burn injury center: intensive care unit 71 with 6 beds
  • Trauma surgery: Intensive care unit 73 with 8 beds
  • Cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery: intensive care unit 74 with 21 beds
  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery: Intensive care unit 77c with 4 beds
  • Visceral and transplant surgery: Intensive care unit 81 with 22 beds

The anesthesiological intensive care units 44 and 34 are set up as interdisciplinary wards, on which patients in particular are cared for after major operations or multiple trauma. One focus is on the early treatment of acute lung failure. Intensive care unit 73 mainly cares for patients after elective accident surgery and multiple trauma patients.

Ward 81 looks after patients after visceral surgery and transplants of the pancreas, liver and kidneys. After the completion of the new transplant and research center (TPFZ) and the corresponding operating theaters, it moved from the ward block.

Ward 71 is the intensive care unit of the MHH Burn Injury Center with a total of 6 beds for severe burn injuries. After the plastic, hand and reconstructive surgery moved from the Oststadt-Heidehaus Clinic and the renovation of the front area of ​​the old intensive care units 71-74, it moved to the MHH and is managed by Peter M. Vogt .

On April 1, 2011, the Linden Dermatology Clinic was taken over by the Hanover Region Clinic and incorporated into the MHH as a clinic for dermatology, allergology and venereology . Operations were initially continued at the old location in Linden-Süd , but the clinic has now moved to the MHH campus.
