The University Hospital Erlangen is a hospital of the maximum level of care and the hospital of the medical faculty of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg . In addition to the St. Marien Forest Hospital and the Clinic on the Europakanal, it is one of three clinics in Erlangen and, with its university outpatient departments connected to the specialist departments, also performs the tasks of a city hospital.
history
The university hospital was founded in 1815.
The University Hospital Erlangen received national attention in 1982 with the birth of Germany's first test tube baby and ten years later with the Erlangen baby .
building
The clinics, independent departments and institutes are spread over several locations in the inner city area. Most of the clinic buildings are located around the Erlangen Palace Gardens.
Current new buildings and plans
The planned operational center based on plans by Gerkan, Marg and Partners is under construction . In the first construction phase, a block of 328 beds was built on Ostliche Stadtmauerstraße by mid-2013 for around 62.5 million euros.
In a second construction phase from 2013 to 2020 after the demolition of the old ward building for around 176 million euros was the construction of a functional wing with 20 operating theaters, two intensive care units with a total of 42 intensive care beds, the full expansion of the central emergency room already started as part of the new construction of the internal medicine center and a heliport planned. In the winter of 2018, the responsible engineering office was terminated due to insufficient or inadequate services, which resulted in a delay in completion until around 2021 and an increase in the previously approved construction costs of 200 million euros by an unknown amount.
structure
The clinic has been run as an institution under public law since June 2006 under the legal supervision of the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture, Science and Art. The supervisory board is responsible for monitoring and for structural and development planning. The management function with decision-making authority is performed by the hospital board. This is advised by the clinic conference, which, in addition to the clinic and institute directors and heads of the independent departments, also includes representatives of the nursing service and representatives of non-academic staff.
Supervisory board and hospital board
In addition to the Bavarian State Minister for Science and Art as chairman, the Supervisory Board includes a representative each from the Bavarian Ministry of Science, Finance and Social Affairs as well as the President of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, a member of the Advisory Board of the Medical Faculty, an external economic expert and a head of an external clinical facility.
In addition to the medical director, the commercial director and the nursing director, the dean of the medical faculty is also represented on the hospital board.
