In the University Hospital Magdeburg A.ö.R. around 4,100 employees (including the medical faculty) work in over 20 institutes and 25 clinics. With around 1,100 beds, it is the largest hospital in Magdeburg and in northern Saxony-Anhalt. The current medical director of the university hospital is Hans-Jochen Heinze. The current dean of the Medical Faculty of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg is Hermann-Josef Rothkötter.
Locations
For historical reasons, the Magdeburg University Hospital is locally separated from the rest of the university in the Leipziger Strasse district south of Magdeburg's city center on the site of the former Medical Academy . Only the university women's clinic is located in the building complex of the former state women's clinic in Stadtfeld Ost, west of the city center. As the university's second campus, the university clinic is the training center for over 1,000 prospective doctors and at the same time a center for medical care for the citizens of Saxony-Anhalt. As a hospital of maximum care is the medical faculty meeting point for very serious diseases.
history
On September 7, 1954, the Magdeburg Medical Academy (MAM) was founded, which emerged from the Gustav Ricker Hospital in Sudenburg, which was founded in 1891. In the beginning, four institutes and eight clinics with over 2000 beds were available with the children's and women's clinic. In the years that followed, the MAM was continually expanded because, in addition to teaching and research, it also ensured medical care in what was then the district. In the first few years, however, there were considerable difficulties in the research area; it was not until the 1970s and 1980s that the main profiles of neuroscience , immunology , pregnancy and pediatrics emerged.
When the university was founded on October 3, 1993 through the merger of the universities and academies, the MAM became the medical faculty. In recent years, the centers and university clinics of the Medical Faculty have increasingly concentrated on providing special care for patients. For example, the Clinic for Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery was opened on campus in September 1995 , which together with the University Clinic for Cardiology , Angiology and Pneumology forms the second heart center in Saxony-Anhalt. Since 2007, all facilities have been located on the Leipziger Strasse campus, with the exception of the University Women's Clinic. In 2004 a new building complex with 16 operating theaters and 4 intensive care units was built on the main campus, used by 13 clinics. The clinic has been an institution under public law in the state of Saxony-Anhalt since 2006 .
Medical treatment
It is a maximum care hospital . It has a total of 1,130 beds, making it the largest hospital in Magdeburg. In 2012, 247,000 outpatients were treated, almost 47,000 inpatients and over 3,100 semi-inpatients. The clinic has several certified treatment units , for example a stroke unit (8 + 1 beds) or the heart center.
Teaching
The Medical Faculty of the University of Magdeburg trains around 1,000 prospective doctors at the University Hospital. In the various on-site facilities, both theoretical and practical medical knowledge is imparted from the beginning of the course. The contiguous campus on which all clinics and institutes are located, apart from the women's clinic, is also advantageous.
In 2009 a skills lab was opened at the medical faculty. There, prospective doctors can train practical skills in the care of doctors and student tutors.
Research priorities
The Medical Faculty maintains two main research areas. These are the neuroscience major and the immunology major including the molecular medicine of inflammation.
In close cooperation with the Otto von Guericke University and the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology (IfN), which is also heavily involved in the training of neurobiology and neuroscience students, Magdeburg has been developed into a leading center for neuroscientific research. Europe's first 7 Tesla high-field magnetic resonance tomograph is located on the clinic premises, which was the most powerful device in the world when it was put into operation and which enables the highest image quality for neuroscientific research purposes.
A science center for applied brain research and medical technology (ZENIT - Center for Neuroscientific Innovation and Technology), which is unique in Europe, was inaugurated on the campus of the university clinic in June 1998. Scientists from private research companies, from university institutes and clinics and employees of the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems can work in this complex.
The focus of neuroscience is anchored in the “Center of Behavioral Brain Sciences” (CBBS) research center. Research work is carried out in the "Magdeburg Institute for Dementia Research" (MID), a partner institute of the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE).
The research focus “Immunology including the molecular medicine of inflammation” of the Medical Faculty was also systematically expanded. The decoding of the molecular processes that influence cellular function in the healthy organism and in disease situations is the focus of research in the immunological focus.
Another focus of immunological and cell biological research at the University Hospital deals with a new research area, systems biology . This is anchored in the University Research Center Dynamic Systems (CDS) and is funded in the excellence offensive “Networks of Scientific Excellence in Saxony-Anhalt”. In addition to university medicine, several university faculties participate in the CDS. In 2007, Magdeburg was declared one of the four German centers for systems biology by the BMBF.
