The pediatric surgery is a separate subject in the field of surgery , which includes the diagnosis, surgical and conservative therapy such as follow-up of surgical and urological diseases, deformities, tumors, injuries and accidents in childhood, including the prenatal surgery. Content of the subject

Since children are not “little adults”, pediatric surgeons deal with problems of a different nature than adult organ surgeons. You treat patients "from head to toe" in a very dynamic phase of life. Pediatric surgeons must have knowledge of more organ systems than individual organ surgeons. Knowledge of growth and maturation as well as the interaction of the various organ systems is particularly important in order to be able to treat complex congenital malformations and diseases that are particularly dynamic in growing age. The young patients also have different demands on attention and interaction than adult patients. These must also be adequately taken into account in order to achieve a good treatment result. The most common diagnosis treated in pediatric surgery is a concussion . Other frequent diagnoses are appendicitis , hernia , forearm hernia and the clarification of abdominal pain . The most common operations include inguinal hernia surgery , bone fracture treatment (with and without metal stabilization), appendectomy , circumcision and testicular displacement .

In order for a completed medical studies as a specialist in pediatric surgery to take action is needed in Germany and in Switzerland a six-year training period.

The respective state medical association is responsible for the exact mode of specialist training .

According to the current training regulations (2003), there is initially a two-year basic training course in surgery, which is carried out in any subject within the surgical field. This includes twelve months within surgery and six months each in the emergency room and in an intensive care unit. Six months within the surgery can be completed with an outpatient surgeon.

The basic training is followed by a four-year training in pediatric surgery, which includes twelve months of pediatric and adolescent medicine, of which six months can be credited in the field of intensive care medicine .

Still eligible:

One year of further training can be completed with a resident doctor. In order to be admitted to the specialist examination, an "OP catalog" must also be fulfilled.

The German Society for Pediatric Surgery , based in Berlin, represents Germany's pediatric surgeons as a scientific specialist society. The outpatient children's surgeons are organized in the professional association of established children's surgeons in Germany . At the international level there is the World Federation of Associations of Pediatric Surgeons as the umbrella organization of the national pediatric surgical specialist societies as well as the European Pediatric Surgeons Association and the Pediatric Surgery sections of the Union of European Medical Specialists .
