Herbert Eckstein (surgeon)

Herbert Eckstein (born July 11, 1926 , † November 5, 1986 ) was a British pediatric surgeon of German - Jewish origin specializing in pediatric urology .

Herbert B. Eckstein was born into a German medical family as the son of Albert Eckstein , d. 1950 in Hamburg, and Erna Eckstein-Schlossmann, d. 1998 in Cambridge . Father, mother and grandfather Arthur Schloßmann were pediatricians . After his father, who had been the director of the Academic Children's Clinic in Düsseldorf as the successor to his father-in-law since 1932, was released in 1935 because of his Jewish origins , the family emigrated to Turkey . Eckstein received his education in England. There he also studied medicine.

From 1958 to 1961 he set up the children's surgery department in Ankara at the children's hospital at Hacettepe University together with his mother, who is also a pediatrician. In 1961 he returned to England and worked as a resident doctor at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, where he worked as a pediatric surgeon from 1963 and later at Queen Mary's Hospital Carshalton, Surrey .

Eckstein was the first to describe ureterocystoplasty and in 1973 introduced bladder augmentation with the aid of the dilated ureter as a treatment technique. In 1981 he became an honorary member of the German Society for Pediatric Surgery .

A medical conference was held in Istanbul in 1995 in his memory; A specialist book was dedicated to him on this occasion.
