Angela Genger
Angela Genger (born September 13, 1947 in Düsseldorf ) is a German historian and memorial educator whose main focus is the time of National Socialism .
Life
Angela Genger studied history, politics and education at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and then worked at the German Institute for Scientific Pedagogy in Münster, where she was concerned with the evaluation of teacher training. In 1980 she became the director of the newly founded Old Synagogue Memorial in Essen .
From January 1988 on, she was founding director of the Dusseldorf Memorial . Here she researched the history of the Düsseldorf Jews and their deportation to the ghettos, persecution and resistance, as well as memorial site education and didactic and remembrance approaches to the Nazi past. In addition, she conducted numerous interviews with Holocaust survivors all over the world and published their memories, diaries and correspondence.
In 1995, Genger was the initiator and founding member of the working group of Nazi memorials and places of remembrance in North Rhine-Westphalia , which she chaired until 2002. Her successor there was Alfons Kenkmann (Münster). As head of the Düsseldorf memorial, she retired at the end of 2010.
Honors
She is an honorary member of the support group of Mahn- und Gedenkstätte Düsseldorf eV
In September 2015 she received the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .
On November 10, 2016, she received the Josef Neuberger Medal of the Düsseldorf Jewish Community.
