Fritz Rehbein (born April 8, 1911 in Westuffeln , Hesse ; † September 7, 1991 in Bremen ) was a German pediatric surgeon in Göttingen and Bremen.
Life
After completing his studies, Fritz Rehbein took up a position with Rudolf Stich in the Department of Surgery in Göttingen on January 1, 1936 , where he acquired knowledge of surgery, orthopedics and urology . In 1948 he completed his habilitation at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . In 1951 he was elected chief physician at the Clinic for Pediatric Surgery at the Bremen-Mitte Clinic and in 1953 he was appointed professor at the University of Göttingen. He worked at the Bremen-Mitte Clinic until 1976. During this time he dealt with abdominal and thoracic surgery and traumatology , pediatric urology and neurosurgery . He developed several surgical techniques that enabled the successful treatment of previously incurable congenital malformations, particularly of the gastrointestinal tract , and a globally recognized surgical technique for the surgical treatment of the funnel chest . He also dealt with the diagnosis and treatment of Hirschsprung's disease , esophageal atresia and hiatal hernia . On October 17, 1951, he performed the first successful esophageal atresia operation in Germany. During his 25 years in Bremen, over 500 children with esophageal atresia were operated on. On October 31 and November 1, 1974, he organized and directed an international symposium on esophageal atresia in Bremen.
Fritz Rehbein published numerous scientific papers . In August 1964, together with the pediatrician Gerhard Joppich and the neurosurgeon Karl-August Bushe, he founded the Journal for Pediatric Surgery , the world's second oldest specialist journal for pediatric surgery. His monograph Pediatric Surgery , published in 1976, has been translated into several languages.
