Infectious diseases

The Infectious Diseases (derived from " infectious "), actually Infectology (from Latin inficere ), is the doctrine of the whole area of infections and infectious and Infestationskrankheiten . It is an interdisciplinary science in the fields of biology and medicine that deals with the research, prevention and treatment of viral , bacterial , mycotic and protozoal infections in humans. At the state level in Germany, the Robert Koch Institute , Berlin, is a leader in health surveillance and hygiene in the division of the Federal Ministry of Health .

Basic infectious research

Basic research takes place in infection biology ( bacteriology , virology , parasitology and immunology ) and epidemiology . In Germany there are u. a. Institutes from universities , the Max Planck Society and the Helmholtz Association are involved.

The outpatient and clinical care of patients with infectious diseases takes place in medical infectiology . In the case of infections with highly contagious pathogens, patients are treated in special isolation wards.

  • Medical clinic with a focus on infectious diseases and pneumology at the Charité in Berlin: The clinic was founded in 1891 by Robert Koch . The only German chair for clinical infectious diseases and the largest German special isolation ward for highly contagious diseases are located here.
  • Bernhard Nocht Institute and Clinic in Hamburg: The clinic was founded in 1900 specifically for the treatment of tropical diseases .
  • Center for Infectious Medicine and Hospital Hygiene at the Jena University Hospital : The center looks after patients with various infectious diseases in line with the latest scientific knowledge as part of a clinic-wide consultation service and a special outpatient department. The research focus is on new strategies against infections by multi-resistant pathogens .
