The University Hospital Jena ( UKJ ) is a hospital in Jena and the only Thuringian location for university medicine. The largest clinic in the Free State of Thuringia with 1,396 beds is one of the most modern new clinics in Germany. More than 5500 employees work at the clinics and institutes of the UKJ. Since January 1st 2007 the UKJ has been a corporation under public law and part of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena . Their medical faculty is integrated into the UKJ.

history

In 1558 the medical faculty was one of the founding faculties of the University of Jena. In the 17th century, greater practical relevance was sought and scientifically oriented research began to establish itself. In 1803 the city of Jena built a hospital into which every national could be admitted against reimbursement of meals. In the course of the 19th century, extensive new buildings, conversions and extensions took place on the premises of the clinic, which made inpatient care more and more popular. The number of beds rose from 279 to 539 between 1880 and 1900 alone. Numerous new clinics with independent specialist areas emerged in the early 20th century. In 1917, with financial support from the Carl Zeiss Foundation, a children's hospital was built in the Jena-Süd district . During and after the First World War, other important new clinics were built at various locations, such as the dermatology clinic in Erfurter Straße (completed in 1924) and the ear, nose and throat clinic in the area of Landgrave am Steiger (1928). During the Second World War, buildings in the Bachstrasse area such as the dental clinic and the medical polyclinic were particularly hard hit. The grammar school built on the Steiger in 1915 was expanded into a tuberculosis clinic in 1950. The urological clinic was housed here until 2017.

The facilities, which were run as "Thuringian State Clinics" until the 1950s, were named "Clinics of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena". Between 1975 and 1980 the Clinic for Internal Medicine in Jena-Lobeda-Ost was the first new clinic to be built in Jena since 1928.

In two construction phases and several construction phases, new buildings have been moved into Jena-Lobeda since 2004 in order to concentrate the clinic at one location. When building section A5 is completed, all areas with patient care - with the exception of the clinic for psychiatry and psychotherapy and the clinic for child and adolescent psychiatry, psychosomatics and psychotherapy - almost all clinically relevant diagnostic services and a large part of clinical research will be at the Jena site -Lobeda.
