history

Founding talks in the Office of the Federal President in 1974
Constitution of the German Cancer Aid (1975)

The association was constituted as Deutsche Krebshilfe e. V. on September 25, 1974 on the initiative of Mildred Scheel, the wife of the then German Federal President, in Bonn at the Federal President's Office ( Villa Hammerschmidt ), where the eight founding members decided on the association's statutes. Already in the founding year, the X-ray doctor emphasized that the taboo about publicly speaking about breast and abdominal cancer in women must be broken quickly. Based on her medical assessment, she sees cancer as a very threatening widespread disease .

After the foundation of the German Cancer Aid in 1974 it became obvious that many people feel personally connected to the organization and would like to document this. Because of this, the Mildred-Scheel-Kreis (MSK) Friends' Association was brought into being. The initially loose association of like-minded citizens received the status of a registered association on November 7, 1977. At that time, there were already more than 50,000 citizens in this circle. Mildred Scheel personally looked after the members and met them for regular tea hours.

The association's tasks are defined in the statutes as follows: “The purpose of the association is to combat cancer in all its manifestations through suitable measures, in particular information and education, precaution, health education, prevention, early detection, diagnostics, therapy, aftercare and research . “In the first fifteen months after its founding, the German Cancer Aid recorded income of more than 4.6 million euros, in 1984 for its tenth anniversary - it was 18.9 million, in 1995 the 50 million mark was exceeded. At the turn of the millennium, the German Cancer Aid received around 71.5 million euros, and in 2007 the income was 100.4 million euros.

In 1999, and thus 25 years after it was founded, the association had supported around 1,600 projects - with the aim of improving prevention, early detection, therapy and aftercare in cancer and promoting research. 4,000 individual donors and 6,600 inheritances and bequests had contributed to a large amount of donations; in 1998 that was 130 million deutschmarks. By then, the organization had helped build bone marrow transplant capacity . Targeted funding was aimed at setting up donor files in order to find suitable stem cell donors for patients in their own country. As the largest private organization in the fight against cancer, it played an important role in providing funding for research. Especially through its subsidiary organization, the Mildred Scheel Foundation for Cancer Research, the German Cancer Aid has supported numerous projects and therapy studies since it was founded and promoted the international exchange of experience. "Cancer Aid's commitment has changed public awareness and medical reality," said Federal President Johannes Rau during the ceremony in Bonn on October 1, 1999 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of German Cancer Aid.

The conversion of the association into a foundation was decided in 2014 at the general meeting in Bonn. The German Cancer Aid Foundation, established as a foundation under civil law and based in Bonn, was recognized by the Cologne District Government as having legal capacity.

financing

The foundation finances services exclusively through donations. It does not receive any public funding. Funds from the pharmaceutical industry will not be accepted. Since it was founded in 1974, Deutsche Krebshilfe has received over two billion euros in donations and other contributions from the population.

  • According to the current list of 2017, the income in the 2016 financial year from donations reached a total of 249.2 million euros. The largest items were inheritances and bequests with around 200 million euros. The total for 2016 includes 380,000 individual donations from private individuals and companies totaling 28.6 million euros. In the 2016 financial year, the organization funded a total of 127 projects and initiatives with the annual income in order to further improve care for people with cancer.
  • In the 2017 annual report, Krebshilfe drew a positive balance of income and activities. The total income was 122.4 million euros, announced CEO Gerd Nettekoven with thanks for the willingness of the citizens to donate.
  • The solidarity of the donors with the German Cancer Aid continued in 2018. Cancer Aid has generated over 135 million euros in income, according to the annual report presented at an international press conference in Berlin in July 2019. 85.2 million euros alone came from inheritances and legacies. In this way, inheritances and legacies are once again the largest single item in revenue in 2018. Krebshilfe CEO Gerd Nettekoven praised the citizens' loyalty to donations, "who give us the opportunity to advance the fight against cancer with their donations." In addition to the income of the aid organization, there were almost 400,000 individual donations from private individuals, the Mildred Scheel support group and companies with a total of 28.5 million euros, proceeds from campaigns and events, donations of condolence and allocations from monetary requirements. The German Cancer Aid funded or initiated a total of 128 projects as well as other programs and initiatives with the income from 2018 in order to improve the care of people with cancer.
  • In 2019, the German Cancer Aid raised 127.6 million euros. With donations from the population as well as proceeds from inheritances and legacies, the organization was able to support 116 new projects and initiate numerous initiatives in the fight against the common disease.

The association maintains an office in Bonn, which also manages the day-to-day business of the subsidiary organizations. These are:

  • Mildred Scheel Foundation for Cancer Research, founded on February 16, 1976

The Mildred Scheel Foundation for Cancer Research is a German science foundation . Its primary goal is to advance and intensively support the fight against cancer, primarily through long-term funding of scientific, clinic-related cancer research projects. The organization is an independent foundation with legal capacity . The foundation also supports qualified young scientists, among other things , to help secure Germany as a research location in the field of oncology . International encounters and cooperation are served by conferences that have been organized by the foundation from the start. For years, the "Mildred Scheel Cancer Conference" has been taking place regularly in the summer months in the Petersberg guest house near Bonn.

Information work

The organization educates the population about the disease cancer, in particular about the possibilities and benefits of measures for prevention and early detection. Information work includes free films and brochures, etc. a. the series Die Blauen Ratgeber . They include guides to social benefits, cancer prevention and disease management.

The TV magazine in vivo has been produced since 2006 and moderated by Annika de Buhr and Silvia Laubenbacher . The quarterly magazine of the German Cancer Aid reports on nationwide activities of the organization, fundraising campaigns by citizens and new findings in the fight against cancer.

Guidelines

In view of the spread of the widespread disease cancer, the specialist publications published by the German Cancer Aid Foundation together with the German Cancer Society and the Association of Scientific Medical Societies in Germany were in demand as part of the "Oncology Guideline Program" . In the 2018 financial year, Deutsche Krebshilfe provided around 1.2 million euros in donations for creating and updating S3 guidelines.

German Cancer Aid Prize

The German Cancer Aid Prize is an award for German cancer researchers. It goes back to an inheritance that the German Cancer Aid received in 1995.

Honorary award: Smoke-free seal

In December 2011, the association and the non-smoking alliance awarded the ARD / MDR television production In all friendship with the "smoke-free seal". The award has been given since 2003 in recognition of the fact that TV and film productions refrain from depicting smoking scenes. At the same time, both organizations are protesting against the fact that especially on German television " surreptitious advertising for cigarettes occurs despite the legal ban on advertising ".

  • In 2015, the ZDF crime series Die Rosenheim-Cops received the “smoke-free seal” award. According to the laudation, the award was given at the award ceremony because the production “dispenses with smoking characters and helps to present non-smoking as a normal social condition”.
  • In 2017, the “Rauch-frei-Siegel” award from the Non-Smoking Action Alliance (ABNR) and the German Cancer Aid Foundation in Berlin went to Film At Eye Level from director Joachim Dollhopf and screenwriter Evi Goldbrunner .
  • In 2019, the honorary award "Smoke-free Seal" of the German Cancer Aid and the Non-Smoking Action Alliance (ABNR) for the family film Rocca changes the world was awarded in recognition that the story of the eleven-year-old Rocca does without smoking scenes.

The Mildred Scheel Sponsorship Association

The Mildred-Scheel-Förderkreis is a subsidiary organization founded by Mildred Scheel on November 7, 1977 . In this association people can get involved who feel particularly connected to the organization. The main concern of the association is to continuously improve the treatment and care of people with cancer over the long term.

The Mildred-Scheel-Förderkreis maintains and operates the Mildred Scheel Academy for Research and Education in Cologne since 1992 . The offer of this advanced and advanced training center is aimed at everyone who works professionally or on a voluntary basis for people with cancer, as well as cancer patients, their relatives and interested citizens. The chairperson is the author and daughter of the founder Cornelia Scheel . On December 19, 2017, at a ceremony in Bonn, she took over the chairmanship of the Association from Cancer Aid Honorary President Dagmar Schipanski , who continues to be involved in foundation committees and in the health policy discussion on cancer.

Mildred Scheel Junior Centers

The German Cancer Aid Foundation supports research in order to find new diagnostic methods and therapies. As part of the increased funding, the fifth “Mildred Scheel Junior Research Center” was set up at the Würzburg location in 2019, where young scientists will in future contribute to keeping cancer research in Germany fit for the future. The initial funding amounts to ten million euros each from donations. In Würzburg, the Medical Faculty of the Julius Maximilians University (JMU) is the sponsor of the new youth center. It is headed by Professor Martin Eilers, cancer researcher at the University's Biozentrum.

Cooperation with the DKG

The German Cancer Society (DKG) and the German Cancer Aid organized the central event, the German Cancer Congress (DKK), for the first time in 2014 in Berlin. It is the largest and oldest specialist congress on cancer diagnostics and cancer therapy in the German-speaking area of international interest. In February 2018, the DKG and the German Cancer Aid Foundation organized the cancer congress in Berlin as equal partners for the third time in a row. At this specialist congress with international participation, a record attendance of around 12,000 experts in four days highlighted the importance of cooperation between leading cancer organizations. The number of visitors to the DKK has been increasing since the DKG-Cancer Aid cooperation. At the 2016 congress, 1,235 participants from all professional groups related to cancer were registered.

Combating cancer as a common goal

In 2012, both organizations identified the fight against cancer as a common goal. Since then, they have been working together, above all, in providing specialist information for citizens by providing brochures free of charge in order to avoid duplication of work. In 2014, Deutsche Krebshilfe and DKG intensified their joint information work in a rehabilitation after cancer campaign in order to help those affected to their justified claims more quickly. The number of applications for oncological rehabilitation has been falling since 2011. At the same time, doctors and patient organizations are convinced that the need for rehabilitation continues to increase.

Since October 2014, DKG and Deutsche Krebshilfe have been offering their extended telephone service for patients in partnership. The Infonetz Krebs advisory service has been set up nationwide. Those affected and their family members can get free advice on cancer by calling 0800/80 70 88 77. With this, the specialist organizations reacted to the increasing need for advice in the Federal Republic. The consultants can access an extensive database in which the current knowledge in oncology is bundled. It was set up by scientists from the DKG and the DKH. The quality-assured information is also preparation for the consultation with the doctor.

Corona crisis and cancer patients

The threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany prompted the health organizations Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum , Stiftung Deutsche Krebshilfe and the German Cancer Society to set up a task force in March 2020 to jointly advise patients affected by cancer via their information services and the information network free of charge to provide them with current information. "Care for cancer patients must not be neglected under any circumstances," demanded Krebshilfe CEO Gerd Nettekoven. Krebshilfe and DKG would also record changes in the current care situation for cancer patients and set up an early warning system in order to be able to give decision-makers a timely signal about possible cuts in oncology.

Critical consideration

According to information from the mirror , the German Cancer Aid is suspected of nepotism : According to this, the son of CEO Hans-Peter Krämer received six-figure sums for years through an initiative created by the association Handball helps . The German Cancer Aid rejects the allegations; the order to the son's company was not made for family reasons.

In the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung of January 11, 2012, the urologist Lothar Weißbach criticized the Deutsche Krebshilfe e. V., she "disregarded the concerns of the citizens" and because of her there was "a lack of support from the hardship fund for patients in need", said Weißbach. His allegations culminated in the assertion: "The German Cancer Aid is strangling itself." From 1998 to 2000, Weißbach was President of the German Cancer Society. He campaigned for more cooperation between the specialist society and the German Cancer Aid.

In the past, it was criticized that the German Cancer Aid discriminated against minorities out of consideration for its supporters. In 1991, Mildred Scheel's daughter Cornelia Scheel ended her job with the German Cancer Aid. a. as a representative of the Children's Cancer Aid. The reason for this separation was the announcement of her relationship with Hella von Sinnen at the time , as the organization feared negative headlines. There is now a closer connection between Cornelia Scheel and the German Cancer Aid. On the homepage of the Cancer Aid 2016, the dates for the readings by Cornelia Scheel and Hella von Sinnen from the book Mildred Scheel - Memories of my mother were pointed out. At the premiere of the public lecture series in Cologne, the CEO of Cancer Aid gave the introduction. Cornelia Scheel has been chairwoman of the Mildred Scheel Support Group, a subsidiary of the German Cancer Aid, since 2017.

In 2010, the German Cancer Aid refused to name a gamer association on its website as the public donor, but in this case only allowed anonymous donations. The association does not comply with the internal ethical rules. At Gamescom 2016 and 2017, however, a representative of the German Cancer Aid accepted a donation check from two gamers who had been calling for more than a year in their gaming streams to donate to the cancer aid. In 2017, the “Endside Gaming” network also held two benefit events for the German Cancer Aid.

Oddities

From March 27, 2018, users of the German image board pr0gramm donated money to cancer- fighting organizations such as the German Cancer Aid in a humorous protest campaign under the hashtag “Krebsistscheiße” against the investigative US journalist Brian Krebs , which in some cases led to an overload of the donation servers. According to a statement by Gerd Nettekoven, Chairman of the Board of the German Cancer Aid Foundation, around 8,300 donations with a total of 207,500 euros had been received by the afternoon of March 30th. Due to the positive response to the campaign, the Imageboard community simply repeated the campaign on March 27, 2019. The second campaign raised a total of € 277,000, of which € 94,600 went to Deutsche Krebshilfe. Other addressees of the campaign were both times: German bone marrow donor database , German children's cancer foundation , the German cancer research center , the Austrian donor organization , the Swiss donor organization and various other organizations on the subject.
