The Alliance for Non-Smoking (ABNR) is an amalgamation of eleven large non-governmental health organizations in Germany that bundle their political activities in the area of “promoting non-smoking / protecting against the dangers of passive smoking ”. The "Tobacco Prevention Network Office" is part of the ABNR project and is funded by the German Cancer Aid .

In view of the threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany , the campaign alliance of eleven nationwide active partners appealed to the public in April 2020 to take the opportunity to "quit smoking". Pulmonologist and ABNR board member Robert Loddenkemper warned: According to scientific knowledge, smokers have poorer chances of corona infections.

history

In 1992 a “coalition against smoking ” was formed as an action alliance and interest group. Contributors were u. a. the German Medical Association , the German Cancer Society and the German Cancer Aid. Around 80 organizations, associations and associations in all federal states got involved in the beginning with the aim of achieving a total advertising ban for tobacco and cigarettes in the Federal Republic. In 2003, today's association emerged from the “coalition against smoking”. The organization has been led since March 2016 by the doctor and health politician Martina Pötschke-Langer, who worked as an expert in tobacco prevention and control at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg until August 2016 .

Action partner

The following organizations are represented in the ABNR according to alphabetical listing:

The main goal of the alliance is to “stimulate, promote and support measures to contain the health hazards caused by smoking and passive smoking at a political level”. For the World No Tobacco Day proclaimed by the World Health Organization on May 31st every year, ABNR and Krebshilfe issue the motto. For 2016 the motto was: "No space for poisonous messages - stop tobacco advertising now!" For 2020 the motto issued by the German Cancer Aid and the Action Alliance is: "Kill yourself starter kit - don't let yourself be manipulated"

The Federal Association for Prevention and Health Promotion took over the management of the action alliance on July 1, 2009. In addition, a capital office is maintained in Berlin. Before the association change, the Medical Working Group on Smoking and Health in Munich had fulfilled this task as an action member.

Demand: Europe smoke-free

The German Cancer Congress 2020 in Berlin was used by the action alliance with eleven health organizations to make the visionary demand: "Europe must become smoke-free by 2040". The ABNR chairwoman Martina Pötschke-Langer and the German Cancer Aid strongly criticized the fact that the Federal Republic of Germany ranks last in a European comparison of measures to curb tobacco consumption. The result determined in the current tobacco control scale of 36 European countries is the result of years of political inactivity in Germany and “a sign of poverty for us,” complained the scientist. In order not to lose touch in a European comparison, "Germany must act - and now!"

Honorary award smoke-free seal

    • In 2018, ABNR and the Deutsche Krebshilfe Foundation jointly awarded the “Rauchfrei Siegel” award, donated by Krebshilfe, to the successful ZDF crime series SOKO Vienna - SOKO Donau , a cross-border joint production by ZDF and ORF Österreichischer Rundfunk Wien. At a ceremony on World No Tobacco Day in Berlin, both health organizations publicly paid tribute to the fact that “SOKO Vienna” “deliberately refrains from smoking characters” and thus serves as a role model. ZDF editor Silvia Lambri and SOKO actress Lilian Klebow personally received the honorary award from ABNR chairwoman Martina Pötschke-Langer and cancer aid chairman Gerd Nettekoven , who urged the federal government to " continue to push tobacco prevention ".
    • In 2019, the honorary award "Smoke-free Seal" of the German Cancer Aid and the Non-Smoking Action Alliance (ABNR) for the family film Rocca changes the world was awarded in recognition that the story of the eleven-year-old Rocca does without smoking scenes. At an international press conference on World No Tobacco Day in Berlin in May, director Katja Benrath and producer Steffi Ackermann (Warner Bros. Germany) received the award from Krebshilfe CEO Gerd Nettekoven and ABNR chair Martina Pötschke-Langer . Nettkoven complained that “the social trend towards not smoking is not adequately reflected in films”. This has to change. Krebshilfe and ABNR announced that they will continue to award the honorary award to socially conscious filmmakers in recognition of their exemplary achievements.
    • In 2020, the "Smoke-Free Seal 2020" was awarded by the German Cancer Aid Foundation and the Non-Smoking Action Alliance (ABNR) for the film Fritzi - Eine Wendewundergeschichte . The organizations acknowledged: "The film deliberately refrains from smoking characters and thus serves as a role model, especially for young people." The award went to the directors Ralf Kukula and Matthias Bruhn on their behalf .

ABNR and Krebshilfe jointly awarded the honorary prize for the first time in 2003. In 2017, the youth film At Eye Level by director Joachim Dollhopf and screenwriter Evi Goldbrunner received an award.

Fundamental demand: increase the tobacco tax

In 2014, on World No Smoking Day, the members reaffirmed their commitment to stepping up the fight against tobacco consumption. They called on the federal government and the political parties to drastically increase the tobacco tax in order to reduce health-damaging cigarette consumption. In Germany, a third of the adult population (30.1 percent) smoke. That corresponds to around 24 million adults. The consequences are devastating, explained Tobias Effertz ( University of Hamburg ). Cigarette smoking in Germany leads to more deaths than AIDS , alcohol , illegal drugs , traffic accidents, murders and suicides combined. According to the ABNR, over 100,000 people die prematurely every year from the effects of active smoking and at least 3,300 people from the effects of passive smoking.

In February 2015, the action alliance for the first time addressed the issue of electronic cigarettes with other health associations and called on the legislature to ban the distribution of e-shishas to minors for health reasons. At a joint press conference in Berlin, the professional association of paediatricians also emphasized that they support "the general ban on e-cigarettes and e-hookahs for minors - regardless of whether they contain an active ingredient or not". The organizations also declared their solidarity with Federal Family Minister Manuela Schwesig , who after her announcement wants to achieve a ban on the amendment of the Youth Protection Act .

Cooperation in the corona crisis

The cooperation between health organizations has intensified during the corona pandemic, said pulmonologist Loddenkemper. The recommendations on smoking cessation, which had existed for years, also became "even more important". You just have to read them and be interested in the topic of the smoking cessation program . The Cancer Information Network of the German Cancer Aid currently offers information on smoking cessation free of charge by telephone and in print.
