Robert Loddenkemper (born October 21, 1939 in Bad Kudowa , Lower Silesia Province ) is a German physician and pulmonologist .

Life

Born in the Silesian spa town of Bad Kudowa, Robert Loddenkemper grew up in 1945 in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel , where he graduated from high school in 1959. In the same year he began studying medicine at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg / Br. , which he completed in 1964 with a dissertation on "left heart catheterism with special consideration of intercostal left ventricular puncture". Loddenkemper moved to the Free University of Berlin as a medical assistant in 1965 and, as an assistant doctor at the Heckeshorn Lung Clinic, got his first contact with pulmonology , which at the time was known as pulmonary medicine . As a Research Fellow at the University of Illinois, Chicago (USA) - also there with a focus on "Pulmonary Diseases" - he met Nikolaus Konietzko, who later became the head of the Ruhrland Clinic in Essen, with whom he worked in the following decades, based on a personal Collegial friendship, implemented numerous journalistic and association-political pioneering projects.

Following his one-year stay in the USA, Loddenkemper initially worked as a research assistant at the FU-Klinikum Westend in Berlin from 1969 to 1976, before returning to the Heckeshorn Lung Clinic in 1976 as an assistant doctor. There he quickly rose to senior physician in the diagnostic department (1978) under Hans-Jürgen Brandt and in 1983 to chief physician in the internal department (from 1990 pneumological department II). Loddenkemper thus succeeded Karl Ludwig Radenbach , who had managed the clinic together with Brandt. His habilitation in 1983 on functional operability in bronchial carcinoma was followed by an adjunct professorship at the Free University of Berlin ( Humboldt University in Berlin in 1994 , Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin from 2004 ).

Loddenkemper was Deputy Medical Director of the Zehlendorf Hospital (and thus the Heckeshorn Lung Clinic) from 1983 , then Medical Director of the Emil von Behring Central Clinic, under whose roof the Heckeshorn Lung Clinic, the Behring Hospital and the Oskar Helene Heim were brought together (since June 2004: HELIOS Clinic Emil von Behring).

In 2005 he retired, resigned from the management of the clinic and became a member of the board of trustees of the Oskar-Helene-Heim Foundation, which is a partner in the Emil von Behring Clinic.

Robert Loddenkemper comes from a family of doctors and is married to Dr. med. Beate Loddenkemper. Like their sons and grandchildren, both are active in the Zehlendorfer Wespen sports club .

Focus

Loddenkemper's clinical and scientific activities focused on oncology (bronchial carcinoma, pleural mesothelioma ) and endoscopy , especially thorascoscopy, as well as pleural and interstitial lung diseases such as sarcoid , histiocytosis X and IPF . A further, also scientific merit is in the field of tuberculosis control worldwide, to which Loddenkemper devoted himself as Secretary General of the DZK (1996–2011), as well as tobacco prevention in Germany, whose promotion and institutionalization z. B. in the form of the non-smoking alliance he was significantly involved. He initiated, accompanied and published more than 90 international studies in the mentioned fields. Loddenkemper is considered to be one of the leading lung specialists in Germany ( Focus : The large list of doctors 2000) with an international reputation, u. a. due to various offices and functions in domestic and foreign specialist societies. As a result, the former hockey player has earned a reputation as a "team player" within these organizations.

Awards

Loddenkemper is Professor hc at the University of Skopje / Macedonia and an honorary doctorate from the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. Honorary memberships have been awarded to him by the DGP, the DZK, the WATL, the ERS, the IUATLD and the All-Russian Society of Pneumology. He has been an external member of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 2014 . The series of awards also includes the Presidential Citation Lecture Award from the American College of Chest Physicians (1999), the Congress Chairman Award from the European Respiratory Society 2001, the Award from the European Lung Foundation 2004, the Medal of Honor from the Robert Koch Institute in 2007 and the Educational Award from the European Respiratory Society (HERMES Chair) 2010 and Lifetime Achievement Award from ERS Assembly 1 (2017).
