The Zehlendorfer Wespen are a tennis and hockey club from Berlin . The association, which was founded on February 23, 1911, now has around 2,450 members. The “Wespennest” club complex has been located on Lloyd-G.-Wells-Strasse in Nikolassee since 1999 , after having been domiciled in Roonstrasse in Zehlendorf for 88 years . Better training opportunities (now its own hockey field) and, with the move, a new sports facility next to the building were the decisive factors for the move. The area includes ten tennis courts, three indoor tennis courts in a fixed hall, for the winter season a tennis two-field inflatable hall , an artificial turf hockey field, a children's playground, a boules court and an indoor pool with sauna . In addition to the gastronomy, a tennis and hockey shop as well as a physiotherapy practice are affiliated .
Club history
Ferdinand Gruber, the long-time Secretary General of the German Tennis Federation , suggested the establishment of the Zehlendorfer Verein in 1911. The tennis facility was inaugurated in August 1911, and there were two hockey courts. The women's hockey celebrated their first national successes. After the Second World War they reached the finals for the German hockey championship. Wasps were the leaders in team tennis in the Berlin area in the 1920s.
Until the Second World War, there was an ice hockey department that belonged to the top German class. For the 1936 Winter Olympics, four Wespen ice hockey players were appointed to the national team. In 1937 , 1939 and 1940 the Wasps took part in the finals of the German ice hockey championship, in the latter in a war syndicate with BFC Preussen .
In 1948, the Berlin HC and the Zehlendorfer Wespen merged, but in 1950 the clubs became independent again.
tennis
In the summer season, the 1st men play in the Eastern League and the 1st women in the 2nd Bundesliga North. In the senior division, the first wasps teams play for both sexes in all age groups in the Eastern League or the Northern Regionalliga. The association championships of the Berlin-Brandenburg Tennis Association take place every year on the club grounds of the Wasps. Every two years the Wasps host the German Wheelchair Tennis Championships.
hockey
When field hockey the first men playing in the 2. Bundesliga, the women succeeded in the season 17/18 promotion to the Bundesliga , in indoor hockey , the men and women are first class. The men's team secured second place in the Bundesliga East in the 2016/17 season and took part in the final round of the German championship, where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals. In the field of hockey for young people, the Zehlendorfer Wasps with 600 children belong to one of the largest clubs in Germany. In the 2019/2020 indoor season, the boys' A team won a German championship for the first time. This has been achieved three times for girls so far (1991, 2007 and 2010).
Ball school
In addition to hockey and tennis, the ball school is offered for toddlers. In the ball school, the children learn basic skills across all sports games, so-called “building blocks of the ability to play”, the development of which goes back to many years of research in sports science by Klaus Roth (sports scientist) . The modules are assigned to the areas of tactics (A), coordination (B) and technology (C). A, B and C become the “ABC of learning to play”. The play and exercise tasks and the skills to be imparted with them are adapted to the various stages of development of the children. The concept goes back to the Heidelberg Ball School.
